wineries?

looking for a weekend getaway to a winery that we can drive to from Chicago. Know of any? How far of a drive? affordable Hotels nearby?

Re: wineries?

  • Try Saugatuck, MI.  It's about 2 hours away along the coast.  The winery near there that I love is Fenn Valley, www.fennvalley.com.  But you'll pass quite a few other wineries along the way up there.  I've stayed at the Twin Gables Inn in Saugatuck many times--it's actually the only place I'll stay up there, www.twingablesinn.com.  They have rooms in different price points and they also have last-minute Web specials.  You may be able to find other options if it doesn't suit your budget.  Try Trip Advisor for other ideas.  There's also a Saugatuck/Douglas website.  Douglas is another nearby town.  Hope this helps.
  • Southwest Michigan has a few, I think.    and there's even a tour event you can do.    Here's the website for the tour company, and they list the wineries they go visit, in case you're curious.   http://www.miwinetrail.com/

  • There are a whole bunch of wineries in South western MI. I planned a trip out there for a bunch of us a couple years ago.  We rented out a 3 bedroom house out in coloma I believe.  Many people rent their summer homes from those areas.  We had a great time.
  • I've also been to Fenn Valley in MI & like it.

Also there is Lynfred right here in Roselle.  They import the grapes and have a nice winery with turns/tasting B&B etc.

Also Galena has one or two

  • We are going to MI and the wineries over Memorial Day.
  • I recommend Tabor Hill in SW MI.  Great free wine tasting and the restaurant is super yummy.  It's about an hour and a half away.

  • There are also some wineries in Ohio along the lakefront. Vermillion, I believe, has a few. It's about a 5 hour drive from Chicago.
  • Valentino Vineyards in Long Grove is good for a day trip. It is also just around the corner from downtown Long Grove. They do tours and tastings.

  • Check out Southern Illinois- there are tons of fantastic wineries down here and the land is beautiful.  www.illinoiswine.com
