please tell me about Trailane Kennels

I'm venturing over from the Central PA board to ask a few questions. There is a pet store near where I live that makes me believe that some dogs are from puppy mills. When I inquired about the breeder of a specific puppy, I was given Trailane Kennels in Soldier, KS. After doing a google search, I haven't come up with much information, so I thought I'd ask on here. Can you tell me anything about this place? Is it reputable? Thanks for your help!

Re: please tell me about Trailane Kennels

  • Looks like a puppy mill to me - they call themselves a "commercial" kennel, so at best, they are a glorified backyard breeder.

If you want a purebred dog, there are lots in shelters, and it is possible to find a reputable breeder, but under no circumstances will a reputable breeder sell their dgs in a pet store.

If you ask for recommendations for breeders (reputable) on the pets board, there are quite a few ladies who show their dogs who might be able to help.

I would stay away from this particular puppy (and any puppy that comes from a pet store).

  • Any dog you buy in a pet store is from a puppy mill, no matter what the store tells you or what kind of "papers" it says the dog has.  If you really have to have a purebred dog, find a reputable breeder in your area that is only breeding champion bloodlines, or breeding to carry on a working dog trait.  A good breeder will do all of the genetic testing, require you to spay or neuter the dog, therefore not allowing you to breed it, will only have 1 or 2 litters per year, if that, and will not have tons of dogs all over that are kept in cages and not properly cared for.  The breeder should take time to get to know you and your family, as a good breeder would not want their dog to go to a bad home. Unless you plan to show the dog, I would suggest checking out petfinder.com.  There are tons of dogs on there, and you can search by breed, age, size, location, etc. Or just check out your local animal shelter.
  • I called them and they did identify themselves as a commercial breeder. I asked about accomodations for the dogs and they said that they are kept in "dog runs or kennels, depending on the age of the dog." I would go elsewhere with my money...

I agree with PP's, but if you are not set on a puppy, don't forget to check your area for rescue groups for the breed you are looking into. They may have a well-trained, adult dog in need of a home. They may also have puppies in that breed, as well.
