OB/GYN's-are all docs like this, and recommend a female OB/GYN

I am thinking about changing doctors.  My female OB/GYN (which is what I prefer) is kinda blah.  I've seen her once a year the past four years and I like her b/c she is quick, but now that I want to talk about TTC, she doesn't say much.  My last visit was in February and I told her we are going to start TTC and she wasn't very excited.  Do they not get excited b/c it is part of what they do and they see it every day?

Also, she was trying to discourage me from charting.  She said it is too stressful.  But I've enjoyed charting.  I now know that I ovulate late (day 20ish) and I like knowing about what is going on in my body.

We've been TTC for almost 6 months now, and I'd like to talk to her to see if DH needs to get tested or see if we need to do anything, but she's never been very helpful.  Please help! TIA!

Re: OB/GYN's-are all docs like this, and recommend a female OB/GYN

  • It sounds like she is just lacking in the personality department. When we talked about TTC, my doc didn't jump up and down and do fist bumps or anything, but he was genuinely (or just good at faking) happy for us. He told us a few things and asked us if we had any questions. He also told us not to chart or do anything crazy at first - just to "do what you normally do, but do it near the middle of the month." I think the general feeling is that if you're young and healthy, they want you to have fun w the TTC process bc once it becomes stressful it can make getting pregnant that much more difficult.

BUT, if you enjoy charting, I say more power to you. Some people are just very data oriented like that - charting drove me nuts, I couldn't even handle taking my temp at the same time every day. I do know some women who ended up having difficulty getting pregnant and having their charts from early on really helped speed things along.

My doctor is a male and I love him - Dr Blase Pignotti. He's super laid back but has never made me feel like I was crazy (and I was definitely kind of high strung about getting and staying pregnant). I also love his office staff. I know a lot of people who see Dr Stein or Hugge, both women and in the same practice. I saw a male doctor in that practice for a time and really liked him but had tons of trouble with his staff. My girlfriend is going through some repeat miscarriage testing with that office right now, and her OB is really helpful but the staff has made things difficult for her. I hear great things about Dr Shelton (female) in the North County area. She's been my friend's OB through 3 of her kids, and she loves her. Another friend sees Dr McBride, and likes her as well.

Good luck! There are several women on this board who had some difficulty getting pregnant and I'm sure they'll be along w their recs.

  • I highly recommend Dr. Kathy Maupin. She is wonderful and is great with reproductive endocrinology issues.
  • I would recommend Dr. Fred Durer.  He is great.  There are four people in his practice, two men & two women.  Dr. Durer delivers all his patient's baby's, not an on call dr.
  • I see Dr. Holly Kodner and love her. ?She works with Dr. Maupin, who PP suggested. ?Their office is at Olive and Spoede.
