Hi ladies

I just found out I will be attending an education conference in the town of St. James.  I haven't had time to look on the map or do any research over the area i.e. nearby fun spots, restaurants, hotels etc to know if this is even anywhere near St. Louis.  Has anyone been to the St. James area and if so what rec's do you have.  The confirmation email suggested checking out Branson after the conference was over.  Any rec's over that would be great too!  Thanks for the info.  You can find me on the Oklahoma board but will check back periodically, page me if you need me.  Thanks again for all your help.

St. James is about an hour and a half from STL. St. James is about 2.5 hours from Branson. I've only driven through St. James on my way to the Current River, which is a beautiful river to float if you're interested. I don't think there's much IN St. James but the surrounding area has wineries, rivers, and Branson, of course. http://www.stjamesmissouri.org/visit/index.html

  • St James is about 2 hours SW of STL, 10 minutes away from Rolla MO (home of a university and not much else). If you're going to be there for awhile and need to get out, then STL is a pretty easy day trip. If you just want some laid back fun while you're there, check out Maramec Springs Park (http://www.maramecspringpark.com/maramec/index.html). My grandparents live in Rolla and we would always go to the springs while I was growing up. It's just really pretty and peaceful, plus the springs are always a lot cooler than everywhere else. There's a restaurant in St James called Sybil's, which is pretty good - probably the best option in town. If you go to Rolla, you have to go to Pryor's Pizza. It is odd pizza (flat but chewy) but it is something I crave on at least a monthly basis.

I practically grew up in Rolla bc I was always there visiting my grandparents. My brother went to college there, so if you are a bar person I can ask him what he would recommend. There definitely isn't much nightlife, especially in the summer when school is out.

Let me know if you have other questions, and I'll try to think of other things to do.

  • Thanks for the info ladies!  I'm going to drag the hubs along so I think the springs sounds like a fun idea.  We will hit up Sybil's and the weird pizza place.  The hubs really wants to go to Branson for some reason.  I have always been under the impression its for older folks but I'll try it.  I do kind of owe him since I'm dragging him along lol.  I think all I need now is hotel rec's for the area.  I'm sure when I get my information packet hotels will be listed but if you have any that would be great.  I found one online but the number I called just rang and rang.

  • I've only been to Branson once, but it was actually more fun than I thought it would be. If you're a theme park person, go to Silver Dollar City - it's kind of like a Six Flags theme park, but I thought it was nicer. More clean, a lot more shade, and more things to do than just rides, like candle dipping and stuff like that (I like things like that, but that's just me :)) I'm not terribly famliar with that area of the state when it comes to things to do.

Whenever we go to Rolla, we stay at (I think) a Comfort Inn and Suites. We've never stayed in St James, so I can't be much help there. There's also a great ice cream place called Ruby's that we have to hit every time we pass through :)

  • Saint James is near Rolla Missouri...there's not much around there except for wineries.  About an hour from there, is Jefferson City which is our capitol -- you might want to go on a tour of some sort?  Other than that the lake of the ozarks isn't far, that's always a favorite of missourians.
  • Thanks for the info!  I will check out Rolla hotels.  I did some research from the suggested link above and there are only 2 hotels lol.  I think staying at a Comfort Inn national chain may be better than a locally owned hotel.  Thanks again.

  • I went to school in Rolla.  :)  You HAVE to check out Alex's Pizza!  The best there is!  http://www.alexspizza.com/  Zeno's is another nice place to eat in Rolla.  Then they have fast food & stuff.

I think there is a Drury Inn in Rolla and another big hotel, but things have probably changed since I was there.

  • Awesome!  Thanks
