? about name on car title

My car was paid off before we were married, so the title is in my maiden name and so my car registration comes that way too. So did you change your name on your title after you were married? I was reading a website that is about things to change your name on after you get married and it said not to expect to change your name there because they only issue a new title when there is a change in ownership. I need to renew my registration and was going to try to do it then and was wondering what others had to do! Thanks!

Re: ? about name on car title

  • I never did and have had no problems registering it. I think you just have to show the registration office your marriage certificate if you want it registered in your new name.

  • I changed my name on my title when I renewed the registration.  I'm pretty sure I just had to take in my marriage license in addition to the normal renewal documents, but you can call your local tax office to verify.
  • You can change it if you want to, but I don't know that it honestly matters so much. I bought my old car right after I had gotten divorced, but my info still had my married name on it, so that went on the title. Then I changed my name back to my maiden name. When I went to sell it to move here to Japan, I realized it was in my old married name (and now my name is my new married name- if you are following me). We were already here in Japan when I was signing the paperwork and mailing it back to the new owners, so I was a little nervous about it all. But I just signed it in my old name (how it was on the title) and it wasn't a problem at all. So, honestly, I don't know that it matters all that much.

  • I never changed it.  I didn't really see the point, I guess.
