I'm so excited

DH told me that he is booking a cruise for us in October. I have never been on one I can't wait. I had better get my butt in shape.

Anyone that has been on one, what can I expect and what are the good ones to go on?

TIA

Re: I'm so excited

  • Congrats, that's super exciting! I've never been on one either, but my FI went on the Royal Caribbean (boat name was Sovereign of the Seas) and they did 4 days/3 nights to different ports in the Bahamas, including Disney's Atlantis.

  • Yay! That's so exciting.

I've been on a cruise, but it was after my high school graduation and I can't remember details. I think it was 4 days/3 nights and we stopped in Cozumel, Key West, and somewhere else, I think. Can't remember the cruise line. We had a great time.

  • Oh, I love cruises, and hope you enjoy yours too!  How long, and what company?  The company will make a world of difference, IMO.

I've travelled w/ Carnival and Holland America only, and will be embarking on my first Royal Caribbean this September.

  • Jackie: either Carnival or Royal Caribbean.
  • I went on a Royal Caribbean on my HM and it was amazing. My reccomendations are these..

    1. Say you're on your honeymoon .. They can't really check that and staff is definetly ALOT nicer to you. One night we were invited to a night of champagne and cake and it was so much fun!

    2. Book your excursions early.. They fill up faster than you would think

    3. Re-check your list a thousand times because if you forget something.. it's super expensive .. DH and i forgot chapstick and sunblock .. we ended up paying $8 for the chapstick and $10 for the sunblock =( .. The prices are the same on the islands because they know you're tourists

    4. Some people recommend that you book your excursions once you've arrived to your destination because it's cheaper... yes it's cheaper. However, these people are not regulated by the cruise line ... meaning if they run late coming back .. the ship will leave you. Where as a cruise regulated excursion .. if they are running late .. they will not leave you because it is part of the company.. I also dont find it very safe to meet random strangers and trust them.

    5. Chose the second seating dinning .. the reason for this is that most of the good shows happen early and the strict seating will sometimes clash with the times of the shows.. although most cruises take that into consideration and have 2 showings .. some specialty shows only happen once.. and your either there or not .. If you get really hungry waiting for dinner you can always catch a free bite to eat at smaller restaurants.

    6. Dont be embarrased to ask in any situation... DH kept coming back to the room hungry every night  because the portions that they gave him were not enough. Well the next night we found out that if you are polite to your waitor and ask, he'll simply give you a second portion .. so we had extra salads and apps. (The waitor even told us to not be embarrased because they throw so much stuff away at the end of the night).

    7. Im a germa-phobe... So I got this great tip from cruise critics dot com: Most cruiselines do not change your sheets unless you request so(they just fix them up and fluff the pillows). I was on a 7 day cruise .. so by like night 4 I requested for them to be switched.

pheww.. looks like I can go on forever!! I guess I really love it..lol

  • I love cruises!! I actually tried booking one for September but they don't let pregnant women for 24 weeks onboard..I was totally bummed..I wanted one last vacation before the babies came!

I've been on Carnival and Costa Cruise lines..You're going to have an amazing time!!

  • p.s - sorry for the spelling errors .. wrote it all without reviewing =(

Oh, and this was for RCI's Freedom of the Seas

  • Lots of eating!!!!!
  • Thank you that all  helps a lot. I'll look at the website too.

  • Carnival is more of a party / fun cruise... with lots of activites.  For weekend cruises, sometimes it can get roudy.  For weeklong cruises, I think it is more tame.

I've never travelled on RC, but mid-Sept I can give you a review.  =)

I know Carnival allows you to bring one bottle of wine per person on board, which can help with cost.  We smuggled in way more than the limit and wasn't told anything.  =)

As for LaLa's comment re: food at dinner, if DH is in between 2 plates, he'll usually order them both, and sometimes multiple appetizers (and desserts) and no problem!  LOL

  • My DH is a big guy so I'll let him know about the food, he will be very thankful, I don't need him going hungry.

I really want to relax on the cruise and have fun so I'll have to think about the crazieness factor. It might be good for me to get alittle roudy and get out of this mood funk I'm in.

Please do let me know about RC they looks nice online.

"lalala" thanks for the tip about telling them its our honeymoon, our 2 year anni is in September so I won't be to wrong. lol

  • I have been on 2 cruises, both with DH.  The first was the Eastern Caribbean on Princess Cruiseline (Caribbean Princess) and it was our 3 year anniversary cruise and the second was our honeymoon cruise on Royal Caribbean (Mariner of the Seas) and then we visisted the western caribbean.

I love cruises, I think they are awesome.  We love excursions, so we usually do something at every  port.  Book them early, we usually do it with the cruiseline since DH is always afraid that something will happen if we do it with another company not the cruiseline....but i know people that never do it with the cruiseline and they save money and have never had a bad experience.

I love Royal Caribbean, and I highly recommend them.  Princess was amazing, but it's for an older crowd and the entertainment was not good....

I know you will have an awesome time.  We are hoping to go on a Southern Caribbean Cruise next year.
