any recommendations for a good dog groomer?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good dog groomer that is good with dogs with long hair?  We have a collie that is in need of grooming, and our groomer just moved out of state.  Prior to finding our previous groomer, we had a bad experience where our dog came home cut and limping.  I am very hesitant to send him to a groomer without a good recommendation now.

We live in the St. Charles area, but I am willing to drive him farther if it means getting someone who is careful.

thanks.

Re: any recommendations for a good dog groomer?

  • We have been hesitant taking our dog anywhere that isn't recommended as well.  I live a lot further SW than I am sure you would like to drive but we have used the groomers that are attached to Pacific Animal Hospital.  I would look for a groomer that is attached to a animal hospital or vet.  If there aren't any in your area I would suggest asking your vet for a recommended groomer.

  • We take our dog (huskey mix) to a groomer in Eureka. She's next to our vet and we really like her. Our dog hates having his toenails cut and it is a huge issue with him. She takes him over to the vet so they can have some extra help, both to avoid one of them getting hurt (a knee to the face or something similar) or the dog getting hurt. It's quite a distance from St Charles but let me know if you want the shop's info.
  • My mom (Mrs.Goose) takes her two dogs to the Clip Joint in South County off of Lemay Ferry close to McArthur's Bakery.  She's been taking her dogs there for years.  I know before starting there she took the older one (when she was the only) to another groomer and she ended up getting cut.  She's never had a problem with who she uses now and they're really nice.

  • We live in St. Charles and we take our toy poodle to Waggers off of Jungerman and McClay.

They do a good job with her.  When we first started taking her there she was breaking out but once  we asked that they use the hypoallergenic shampoo she hasn't had any problems.

I think Kennelwood off of Mexico might do dog grooming too.

  • I take my maltese to Bogey Hills Animal Hospital for grooming (also her vet). I too, was hesitant after taking her to another place in St. Charles after she came home with cuts all over her belly, and yelped when we touched her ear - they slit the edge of her ear open. I cant remember the exact name of this place but it had a pink sign and I think it had the word poodle in it? It was close to or on Droste.

Anyways, Bogey Hills does a great job. They did knick her last time she got a haircut, but they called and let me know and told me what they did to remedy it. Ive been very pleased with them the last couple years.
