My little pooch is getting spayed today :-(
It's obviously the most appropriate thing to do, but we've been so hesitant. Mostly because we've been afraid of the pain she'll go through. We have this guilt over us thinking she is going to hate us for doing this to her. We had no plans on breeding her, and this is better for her health. We just feel so bad, what parent would actually want this for there little bundle of joy? sigh
Anyways for other doggy parents that have already gone through this, is there any advise you can give me for once we pick her up?
Re: My little pooch is getting spayed today :-(
Thanks for spaying your pooch, I know it is nerve-wracking, but it really is the best thing for the pet world and for her health!
My female dog was spayed quite a while ago, but she came through it just fine, I will say a prayer that all goes well for your little girl. When we picked her up from the vet, she was pretty out of it, and just rested a lot. We have another dog in the house, so we just had to monitor to make sure they didn't play too rough once she was feeling better, so as to not bother the incision area. All in all, it is stressful but worth it in the end.

We spayed both our girls when they were a few months old, before they got their first periods. It sucks to see them in pain, but it's worth it in the long run.
When we picked up Shula, she was COMPLETELY out of it - super lethargic and she couldn't keep her mouth closed, so her tounge was hanging out and she was drooling uncontrollably. It was funny/sad to see her so out of it, but at least I know she wasn't in pain. The only time she squealed in pain is when I accidentally lifted her up in a bad angle that I guess caused her incision to stretch out. Besides that, she stayed perfectly quiet and still for the rest of the day, just sleeping in her little bed.
Stella wasn't as "out of it" as Shula was when her turn came around. Instead, she spent the whole car ride home whimpering and crying. She was like that pretty much the rest of the day.
What happened with both of them was that for the first day (actual day of surgery) they barely moved, and they didn't go to the bathroom. I guess it's because they couldn't get in the right position to squat because it hurt them too much. When we would put them on the ground, they were incredibly stiff and would just stay perfectly still and not even try to walk.
Then for both of them, by the 2nd day, they were feeling SO much better and it was actually a challenge to keep them still. They were both ready to walk/run, jump off and on the couch, etc., which is not good for the day after surgery. It was great to see that they were feeling better, but of course it required a little extra work on our part to make sure that they followed doctor's orders and didn't get hurt.
Shula weighs 15 lbs. and Stella weighs 10 lbs. (both weighed less at the time of the surgery). I know your little girl is small too so this might be an idea of what to expect. The first day is rough, but don't worry...by the second day she should be a lot better Just remember to call your vet if you have any concerns.
Thanks Jen for such details!! I am such an emotional wreck right now. I am picking her up in about 30 minutes and just want to give her all the tlc in the world. I just can't imagine my little ball of energy being lethargic and not moving. I am sure, though, that she will be as your dogs were. They are both small. I had read somewhere that if they get too hyper to actually cut down on the pain medication. They will "relax" more if they feel the pain more, I don't want her to feel pain but if that's what it takes so she doesn't hurt herself guess thats what I will have to do.
Luckily dh is at home, so he will be with her making sure she's ok when I'm not around.
Thanks for the info!!
and Virginny, thanks I know she'll still love us, even with all this "tough love" lol
