pookielove

Hey! I wanted to let you know that our little lovely Tabby is on her tenth life. We had another episode on Sunday morning--which just happened to be Father's Day. Ironically enough, she peed on DH for the first time, mwhahaha (its always on me!) He claims he wasn't as mad as he thought he would be, but it was also 5am, so he wasn't quite awake. BIL was visiting and apparently she was in his room and he kicked her out (not literally kicked, he picked her out and set her outside the room and shut the door). I guess she wasn't happy about it and decided to let DH know. Gosh, she is such a diva.

We called the vet and he is now having us do the following: we've added two more litter boxes (one booda dome, one regular), switched to clay litter (unscented), and she has been bumped up to prozac. The vet said that sometimes cats can develop litter aversion, and they decide that they no longer like the litter that they've used for years. We're really trying everything here! I looked up some things about litter aversion and she has some of the signs, so I'm hoping that is what it is.

Just thought I'd update you!

Re: pookielove

  • Thanks for the update Shannon!  I've been meaning to ask you how she's doing and it keeps slipping my mind.  I'm terrible- if I don't respond to an email right away, it gets buried at the bottom of my inbox and I'll forget about it for months Embarrassed

I'm glad your DH wasn't too mad at getting peed on.  I don't think mine would have taken it too well, especially at 5AM!  Cats just know how to be spiteful.  One time, the door to the closet we keep their litterbox in got closed accidently so they peed on our brand new bed.

I'm glad your vet was able to give you some suggestions.  I hope they help.  We have two litterboxes. One of them is a Booda Dome and all of the kitties prefer that one.  Is the prozac the kind you can rub in her ear?  Hopefully that will make it easier to give than pills.

Good for you guys for trying so hard.  A lot of people would have given up by now.  I think it's awesome that you're willing to do whatever it takes to get the old Tabby back :)

  • Its no problem at all, I was just keeping you updated! My DH can't get too mad, Tabby is his cat, he is the cat lover :) Allie is mine, hehe.

Oh, those little stinkers of yours for peeing on your new bed. They can be quite spiteful can't they?

I have a list of questions to ask the vet about the prozac--we haven't officially started her on it yet, but I will ask about the ear rubbing kind. Although, the pills have been much easier since I picked up the pill popper--thank goodness!

We really are trying our hardest with her. She can be such a sweet thing when she wants to be. Here's a picture of her from yesterday afternoon. She loves to lay on our bed in front of the window. Yesterday it was very breezy and she was soaking up the gorgeous weather. Warning--she isn't very lady-like in this pic!

  • I wanted to ask you--what kind of cat food do you feed your precious ones? Obviously Tabby is very overweight and we are looking to feed her something a little better than Purina in hopes that she can lose some weight. I got some suggestions from the Pets board, but I haven't been able to find any of them at Giant or PetSmart. Thanks!
  • I feed the cats Nature's Variety and the dogs Taste of the Wild.  Both are really good brands.  I buy the food at Pets Purrfur, which is the same shop the doggie playground is at.  I'm sure you could find a place closer to where you live, though.  Most companies have store locators on their websites.  Unfortunately, you can't really get any decent brands at Giant or PetSmart.  They are mostly only available at smaller specialty shops or feed stores.  You'd be surprised at how many of those places that there are, though!  Pet Supplies Plus carries a lot of good brands too.  There's one on Lancaster Ave (in the shopping center with the the DMV), which shouldn't be too far from you.

The other thing that a lot of ladies on the Pets board do is order food online. I think it's www.petfooddirect.com.  They ship it right to your door and there are always coupon codes that the Pets board ladies could give you.  The coupon codes would at least take care of the shipping, so you wouldn't pay any more than you would in the store.

I love that picture of Tabby :)  She seems like a real sweetheart.  I have some pictures of Daisy (the black cat in my siggy) rolling around on our bed the one day.  She looks so happy but when she saw she was being watched, she got this look on her face like "Uh oh- busted! Act surly before they think you're actually happy!"

  • Oh and can you tell me about that pill popper that you mentioned??  That sounds like something I might want to look into.
  • I'll have to look at the Pets Supplies Store. There is another store in Exeter that I get Allie's hypoallergenic treats from that I can look into too. Its next to the Boscovs, Bruno's Pizza, and New York Bagelry. Thanks for the info!

LOL at the image of Daisy rolling around on the bed! What a ham!

The pill popper has been a life saver! It looks like a long syringe (obviously without the needle) and it has a rubber opening on the end. You stick the pill in the end and then push the syringe. The video below shows you how to use it towards the end. (she also shows you how to give a pill without it--poor kitty!)

When I give Tabby her pill, I usually pick her up and set her on my lap facing out. I lift her jaw, open her mouth, and pop it in. I don't pull on her scruff to administer it. It pops the pill so far back that she cannot chew it or spit it back up. I got it from my vet and it was $5.99--the best $5.99 that I've ever spent!

  • Ah- you're talking about A to Z Pet Supplies.  Last I checked they didn't have any good foods there, but they might have improved their selection.  It's been a couple years since I've checked.  I love looking at their fish, though!!  Every time I go in, I have to talk myself out of setting up an aquarium :)

Thanks for the info on the pill popper! That would have come in handy last year when Daisy was sick.  I might have to go ahead and get one just so I have it on hand in case I ever need it.
