Mrs.Buzly your kitchen re-do looks great! Would you be able to tell me a little more about what you did for your cabinets?
We are moving to a new house and plan on painting all the rooms before we move in just so everything is fresh and clean. DH and I have talked about painting our kitchen cabinets as well but were not planning on doing it right away. The previous owners had painted them a cream color, which with the counter tops and everything else doesn?t look bad, except you can tell they were painted a while ago and are starting to wear. I?m worried that once we paint all the other room the kitchen will look so gross compared to the rest of the house. What steps did you do to paint them? Was it a hard project? I guess I?m just looking for more information about it so we can decide if we should tackle it before we move in or wait a month or so.
Thanks!
Re: ~Mrs.Buzly~ or anyone else who has painted their kitchen cabinets
The HGTV website gives step-by-step instructions. I've done it years ago and used an electric sander though for most of the job.

Thanks for the compliment!
That site above is good! I also have other sites I used for help, but I have it bookmarked on my IE (I'm using Firefox right now bc my IE is being temperamental). I'll have to post the link when its working again.
Basically, we wiped the cabinets down with a cloth and then sanded them with 150 grit sandpaper. We wiped them down again and took the doors, hardware, and hinges down. I then primed all of the cabinets, shelves, etc. They were a very dark color, so it took one coat of primer and two coats of paint.
It wasn't hard, but it was just a VERY LONG process. I did all of the painting without any help from DH. If we had worked together, it wouldn't have been so bad. It does take a while for everything to dry mainly because you are painting one side of the cabinet door, waiting for it to try, then flipping it to paint the other. It was also very humid so it took even longer. I used two sawhorses with 2x4s to lay the cabinets on to paint, and as I finished them, I lined the cabinets and shelves up on a ladder laid out on the grass to dry. Kinda ghetto, but it worked for me. The neighbors probably thought I was crazy.
The whole process took me about a week, but we have 17 cabinets, so although its a fairly small kitchen, there were lots of doors! Its so worth it though, thats what you have to keep telling yourself!
If I were you, I would do it before you move in. This will allow plently of time for everything to dry. Not to mention, your kitchen is kind of out of commission for a while during the process--well ours was--everything from our kitchen was dumped into the dining room except for the major appliances.
If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them. jjenkins was a great help to me, so I'm sure she'd be more than willing to help out too.

Ditto Mrs.Buzly...I would definitely do it prior to moving in if you can. I did ours back in January and took off work early a couple days so I could get it done.
I started with wiping the cabinets down and took the doors off. I sanded the doors pretty thoroughly with an electric palm sander to get the shiny poly coat finish off. I laid all my doors on big plastic tarps in our garage to do the door/drawer painting. I did 1-2 coats of primer depending on how much graining was showing through when the coats dried (my cabinets were light honey oak originally) then I used Sherwin Williams Proclassic paint in a satin finish to do the final color coat in another 1-2 coats (if I remember correctly...its been a while!).
I loved the Proclassic paint...its a latex paint that is meant for cabinets and trim. It's self-leveling and has the durability of an oil paint but without the hassle. The guy at my local SW store though warned me about "overworking" the paint because of the self-leveling and recommended using small rollers and only brush where needed.
I have some small pics in my bio if you want to take a look. If you have questions feel free to ask.
