Help - cake for 1st anniversary dinner
With our 1st anniversary rapidly approaching, I want to do a small cake for us. I know that there is Freed's Bakery, who else is a good baker in town? Do you think this is corny to do? I was going to have the cake delivered to Hugo's Cellar where we are going to have dinner and then have the cake presented to us for dessert. Should I use our cake topper as well?
We won't really get to celebrate our anniversary until our trip to San Francisco in July so I kind of wanted to do something special. Any other ideas?
Re: Help - cake for 1st anniversary dinner
That sounds cute! Your DH will love it! Just a few things you should know, if you don't already. I'm not sure if you've been to Hugo's, but we have, and the staff was so out of it that it got frustrating. Make sure to tell them in advance that it's your anniversary and you want things to go smoothly.
We made reservations on what was understandably a busy night for a birthday dinner (happened to be on Christmas Eve), but we still waited over an hour to be seated. Our reservation was set 6 months prior! For 30 minutes we sat at our table without drinks, until finally my husband grabbed a waiter walking by and told him we needed to order some water after waiting to eat for 2 hours. We actually order a very nice (read pricey!) bottle of wine that was never delivered, yet we were still charged for it! At least the food was amazing.
We decided to give Hugo's the benefit of the doubt and recently returned on a non-holiday, only to have the same crappy service. The food is spectacular, but the service was subpar at best. If you want them to coordinate something like receiving a delivered cake and having it ready for your arrival, make sure to stress to them how important it is.
I've lived here 11 years and I've always heard wonderful things about Hugo's. Heck, I went there 7 years ago and it was fantastic. Unfortunately, I think the service has slipped a bit, especially if it's busy. I think you will be fine if you bug them several times and let them know how important this is. Just make sure to give them advanced notice to get their act together.
I so agree. When we went for dinner Christmas night (res was at 5:00) we waited for drinks and the bread FOREVER and then the meal was way long. We were in no hurry but still. Anyway, normally we go on Sunday nights or something but try to avoid the weekends at all possibilities. I am making our res for our 1st anniversary today for Sunday, June 29th and hopefully the service will be better. If not, it is going to be hard to get me to go back. We love Hugo's and the salad is to die for - skip the meal personally.
I did decided to forego the cake though. I am not up to the headache of a mistake and having to figure out where my $65 cake went. The Cupcakery was opened by the house so I might have to just go there and buy a cupcake or something - not very romantic but cake is not a good thing to have in our house.
