newbie ? : )-where is pesto at grocery store?

Never bought pesto before but need it for a recipe tonight. What aisle will it be in at grocery store? Thanks!

Re: newbie ? : )-where is pesto at grocery store?

  • At my grocery store pesto is by the spaghetti and pastas. Sometimes they have it in the produce area near the chopped garlic, too.

  • It should be were the regular pasta sauces are... at least in my grocery store its down the same aisle- its just in a smaller bottle.
  • it can be in two places - if it's refrigerated, it will be with the fresh pastas, olives, fancy cheeses, etc.  which in my supermarket is near the deli and prepared foods.

if it's the jarred kind that doesnt need to be refrigerated before opening, it's usually with the oils/vinegars/condiments, or sometimes with the pasta sauces.

if you cant find it, ask for some help.

  • Thanks ladies! I literally had NO clue Smile
  • I usually make it at home (fresh basil, pinenuts, olive oil and parmesan cheese) but if you want to buy it already made, you can:

    1) find it in the refrigerated section where you see the fresh pastas (like DiGiorgno brands)

    2) look for a small jar in the pasta sauce aisle

If you buy it, I suggest getting the refrigerated section because it most likely won't have as many preservatives.

  • I usually find some in the regrigerated section. There is also usually some jarred pesto in the pasta sauce aisle. Mine is usually on the top shelf in a small jar.
  • If you cant find pesto in your grocery store, you can order organic basil pesto from www.ohpesto.com My family absolutely LOVES it!

Mine is in the "international" section!

It's insanely easy to make though and so much better than the jarred stuff. Just throw some basil, parmesan, olive oil, and pine nuts if you want, into a food processor (or I just use my cheap electric chopper).
  • What BlueBirdMD said - we make our own with those same ingredients.  Of course, I married a 4-star chef, so buying many things pre-made is definately frowned upon.

If you always keep a large jar of olive oil in the pantry you are half way there.  We live in Florida, so we always have a couple of basil plants on the patio, but still, fresh basil is pretty cheap too.

I am obsessed with pesto. I have tried at least a dozen brands. This one is by far the best I've had.
