maaaaaan.

my last cake class is next thursday, and i have to make a tiered cake. besides still having no real idea of what i'm going to do decoration-wise, i just realized that friday is the independence day holiday so i won't be working. i was going to bring it in to work, but now i'm going to have a huge cake and nobody to eat it!

anybody want to come over and have some cake? Cake

Re: maaaaaan.

  • Yes please!

how many tiers is the cake? This lady has lots of pics if you want to browse for inspiration.

  • Ohh, yes please!!  :-)  I love me some cake.

    lmao!

ct, thanks for the link, that's awesome! it only has to be two levels, and i have the choice of stacking or using pillars. i think i'd like to use pillars, but i don't want something that looks like a wedding cake and that's what i'm having the most trouble with i think--coming up with an idea that's fun and looks good, but doesn't scream wedding (mainly because pillars tend to do that, for me at least, but i want to try them).

  • hmmm, thats tough. Maybe try hiding the pillars to make it look less wedding-y?

  • omg, that is so cute!

i dunno. i'm really enjoying making the gum paste flowers, so i may just go all out and rock out the wedding look. we'll see. i just need to decide soon, because i really need to start making some of the decorations this weekend!

How about a forest themed cake?  You could cover the pillars in fondant and make them look like trees...

How long have you been doing cakes?  I'm just getting into it and don't know the first thing about decorating a cake.  I can bake, fill, stack, crumb coat and ice a cake but forget about making it look pretty.

I actually have an order for a half sheet of chocolate on chocolate with chocolate shavings due on Tuesday.  That's as fancy as I get right now.

  • oh, interesting. that's an idea...

i've only really been doing cakes for a few months. i just thought it would be fun--especially after seeing some pictures of ones that two*true did--so i signed up for classes at michael's. there are 4 classes total (4 weeks each), and my very last class is next week. my teacher said they're actually reorganizing all of the classes soon, so there will only be 3 total.

  • Are the classes at Michael's worth it?  I've thought about taking them.  There are also a few cake decorating stores around here that offer classes but I want to make my money worth it.

My Aunt has her own cake business and she's been sending me pans and Wilton books, decorating boards (you pipe on to learn correct technique), etc. I'm such a visual/auditory learner though, I really need the classes.

  • i think they're worth it. they're not too expensive and they're almost always on sale--i don't think i paid full price tuition for any of them. you do have to bring your own cakes and get the supplies you don't already have so it can add up a little, but it's spread out a bit since you don't need to buy everything at once. i've really learned a lot, and it's good to be able to have someone show you how to do it and help you out with everything. plus it's been a lot of fun. i'm definitely glad i did it.
  • Thanks!  I will definitely look into them now.Yes
