It's official!

We're going to Switzerland in September! I just confirmed with DH the dates and we're buying tickets tonight. My best friend is in Lugano so we'll use her place as a hub while we travel to France for a few days, Italy for a day or two and northern Switzerland for a day or two. I am sooo excited!

We would have never been able to go to Europe if my best friend wasn't over there. This has dramatically cut the costs because we don't have to stay at hotels every night (we only have to book a hotel 5 nights out of the whole 14 day trip!). And we get to travel by train! I love traveling and DH finally agreed that he wouldn't rent a car... we'll get eurorail passes.

So if anyone has any good ideas for places in Switzerland, France or Italy for us to visit I'm all ears! We're trying to stay fairly flexible with where we go so we can pick and choose depending on where we are, etc... YAY!

Re: It's official!

  • Awesome!  You'll have a great time!  If you can, definitely go to Rome and Florence.

  • woo-hoo, how exciting Dani!  Paris is a must and i can think of quite a few places there that you should go to.  how many days will you be there?  also, about 2 hours drive north of Paris is Normandie and it's so lovely.

    we'll talk soon!!!

  • how fun!

I have some great recs in England but that's it :)  I'd suggest that over those other places any day!  ha ha ha, just kidding!  :)

I've been to France a couple times (don't be too jealous, when you live in England going to France is like living in San Diego and going to Mexico) - we used to camp on the west coast in Brittany and Quimper... gorgeous area of the country! :)  Paris is nice, I just couldn't stand to be there longer than a couple days but I am NOT a city girl! :)  The Normandy area, as suggested, is also lovely.

Never been to Switzerland or Italy so I can't help with those.. My parents went to Switzerland for their honeymoon but that was in 1975.  I'd ask them for recs but I think it's changed a bit since then! ;)

It's great to have friends in countries like that (especially since everything in Europe/the UK is sooooo expensive!  ugh...)

Enjoy your trip and happy planning :)

  • Beaune, France, which is outside Dijon.  Go to Marche Aux Vin.  Best place ever.

You can use your pass and take the train from Paris to get there.  No car necessary.

  • How exciting!!  Have fun on your trip!  Make sure you take lots of pics and share them with us!
  • I am no help, but congrats! That will be tons of fun.
  • How exciting, your going to have a blast.  I've never been to Switzerland, but in France I would suggest Paris (as suggested in PP), and Arles in southern France.  The last time I was in Europe we got a eurorail pass and the train goes from Paris to Arles.  Arles is really neat because it has Roman walls and a Coliseum (not as large as the one in Rome though).  After Arles we took the train to Cinque Terre (5 coastal villages in the Italian Rivera).  Cinque Terre is neat because the only way to get from town to town is by boat, train, or walking.  There are no roads.  In Italy you should also see Venice, and Rome.  I would suggest buying a Rick Steve's book and deciding which cities appeal to you guys.  Let me know if you need hotel suggestions.
  • all this talk of France makes me want to go back!  i love it there and would love to live there for a few years eventually.

Dani, can you pack me in your suitcase?  J wouldn't mind ;)

  • Haha! Sure... I can pack anyone who wants to go but you all have to fit in one carry on :) And I am positive J won't mind, Tessa!
