Using a travel agent or book on our own?

DH and I are planning a cruise next summer with another couple.  It's a Carnival cruise to the Western Carribean that will take place next June.  We checked on expedia.com and found a reasonable price, but now I have a few questions.

-When going with a group on a cruise, is it best to book through a travel agent to ensure that we're all together, or can we arrange that on our own?

-Can you pay for something like this in installments?

-What are the advantages/disadvantages to using a travel agent?

-I've heard good things about Hayley from Beach Bum travel.  Any other reccomendations?

Re: Using a travel agent or book on our own?

  • Personally, I'd book it on my own.  Then again, I'm a huge Priceline fan, so I'm willing to be flexible about my travel to save $$.  If you call Expedia's 800# they can guide you through booking it for a group.  I think that the website will let you choose several rooms, but the 800# might be easier (and give you more peace of mind.)  Also, I've found that on a cruise, you don't have to be "right next to" each other.  The ship isn't that big, so it's no big deal if you are on a different floor than your friends.

You could also try calling the cruise line directly to see if they'll match Expedia's deal (and cut out the Expedia fees.)

Finally, keep in mind that if you book your airfare through the cruise line, it will be more expensive, but they will do more to accomodate you in case your flight is delayed and you miss your ship.  (Personally, I'd find a cheap airfare on my own and fly in the night before the cruise, just to be sure.)
