Does anyone have children that attend a charter school, or do you plan on using one? During our house search we've found several nice neighborhoods that are unfortunately zoned to less than desirable schools. I know that charter schools are always an option, but I was curious if anyone has first hand knowledge on how difficult it is to get off the wait lists?
Re: Charter schools
Thanks your input! This is the first non-glowing view I've heard about charter schools, so it is very interesting to hear about your opinion. We're looking into homes in Orange county, but I'll keep your statements in mind!
I've been looking into Hope Charter School in the Winter Garden area. I've heard good things from parents who use the school, the FCAT scores published are above average, and the anonymous reviews published online seem to be positive. I'm sure charter schools vary immensely from school to school, county to county, but is there anything else I should be taking a closer look at?
I've had students that came from charter schools and their parents were not happy with the charter school that they attended previously coming into my class. I recently had two students of mine that came from charter schools in osceola and both were significantly behind and their parents were surprised when they came to my class to find out they were behind. Their files also lacked information that should travel with the students year to year ( I had one that was over a year behind and about two pieces of paper work from his previous school). I also had a student a few years ago transfer to a school that was supposed to be great with learning disabilities only to have him return to our school two years later...the parents were not happy with the school (in orange co.).
I've talked to many other teachers after these experiences and most seemed to have the same experiences with charter schools. Though I'm sure it is not true of all of them. I would definitely do my research before sending my child to one though.
Good luck!
What school did you work at? If you don't want to post I understand... can you pm me? I would definitely be curious to see if it's one of the same ones that I have seen from osceola.
Thanks for sharing your experiences! I think we're going to try to avoid buying a home in an area where we'd have to take the charter school route. Hopefully we'll find a home that's zoned to a good elementary school! I never fully realized how bad schools were in Florida until I had my own child. lol Thanks again!!
Hey Jenn, I sent you a PM. : )
I actually just heard about the Foundation Academy for the first time the other day. Have you heard good things about it? We had looked into Hope Charter and Oakland Charter previously.
