I was reading a response you posted about moving to the WI. We are in the same boat. We are moving from Jersey City/Hoboken to WI here in a couple of days. I just was curious what you think of the move? I am from Omaha and am use to the midwest, but not too sure about WI.

Any pos/neg feedback would be great.

Re: *****JerseyCityJen****

  • You will be amazed at the difference between JC and Milwaukee/WI!  I actually just befriended a coworker at my company who also relocated from NJ, specifically Hoboken.

Positives: Lower cost of living, more space for your rent/mortgage, overall ease to daily commutes/interactions, going out is easier b/c no waits at restaurants etc., very friendly people, slower pace is the norm, a lot more outdoor activities if you like a more open space nature-wise, if you have kids it seems like a great place to grow up.  Summers are amazing. So amazing I have never experienced weather this nice on a consistent basis.  You know & trust your neighbors. The people in general are wonderful.  I smile more.

Negatives: very little ethnic/cultural diversity and what there is, is not obvious/a givena meaningful percentage/, many people are born & raised in WI so less exposure to wide range of people with myriad life experiences (& the occasional "judgy" narrow minded person does happen), also since most people are from here they already have a network of friends they've had their whole lives so it can be hard at first. We have befriended a lot of people so far but it just so happens that most of them are also transplants.  No NYC quality culture/arts/entertainment but there are some charming options and Chicago is an easy drive.  Winters are terrible.  I can't find a good Jewish deli or Chinese takeout.

     Hope that helps :)

  • I guess I want to clarify the ethinc/cultural diversity comment. I mean IN COMPARISON to JC/NYC.  I miss the enormous mix of everything.  It's pretty drastic, the difference between the two places, when it comes to that.
