Update on Doctor's Visit

I wanted to post the update this weekend, but didn't have access to the computer. Ok, so went to the doctor and it turns out I have two things. The blurry vision turned out to be a eye virus. He said because I let it go on so long untreated it had gotten really bad. It's call ekc or something like that. Basically it causes these cloudy spots to form around my cornea, and sometimes it will go directly in front of my field of vision which explains why sometimes I can't even see things that are directly in front of me. He gave me some antibiotic drops for the eyes and said I am not allowed to wear contacts for 2 or 3 months. He said even with the drops, it can take up to 2 months to cure. So it's a relief to know what I have will eventually go away, but it's still so annoying not to be able to see clearly. When my doctor saw my eyes he kind of just let out a gasp and stepped back. He was stunned at how many cloudy spots (which are the actual virus) I had in my eyes. His reaction alone freaked me out. lol I thought he was going to tell me I was going blind or something. Luckily it wasn't anything like that.

The second thing I have are migraine headaches. He said that my symptoms are text book migraine headaches: standing up, getting lightheaded, tunnel vision, then getting a bad headache. He said he could prescribe some pain killers, but that honestly the best thing to do is just to lie in a dark room with my eyes closed for a few minutes. I agree with him, when I do this it's much better, and I prefer doing this then having to get dependent on pills.

Anyways, that's my update. Luckily it wasn't anything life threatening, but I did get scolded from my doctor for not visiting him sooner. Now I have a follow up in about 7 days. Cross my fingers and home things are better.

Thanks for all your thoughts and kind words. :-)

Re: Update on Doctor's Visit

  • Wow, that's crazy!  I'm glad you will be able to recover relatively soon.
  • Glad to hear you got a diagnosis... and you'll be fine in a few wks/mo!

As for someone that suffers from migraines (since the young age of 3), yes, dark rooms are amazing.  I usually make sure the air is REALLY cold and the fan is full blast.  And an ice pack on my forhead (and sometimes back of neck) work amazingly.  I too am not a fan of the meds.  When it gets bad, I take 2-4 advils/tylenols.

    Feel better soon!

  • OMG time for scolding number two.  You should never wait that long to go to the doctor!  This could have been much worse so next time you feel any crazy symptoms you need to go right away.  Always remember early detection is always best.  This does not matter what the case is.  Done with the scolding.

I am glad it did not turn out to be something worse.  I hope you get better soon!

  • Thank you all!!

and thank you Jackie for the ice pack and other suggestions. I'm sure it will come in handy when I get an episode.

Shirly, yes yes lesson learned. I will not avoid the doctor next time when I get this crazy symptons. Lowering head in shame. :-(

  • Thanks for the update. I've been thinking about you all weekend.  As for the migraines (I've been suffering since I was 19), watch what foods you are eating. I use to have them really, really bad (have been hospitalized for them) and have been through a variety of pills and treatments (didn't like any of them).  Finally, a holistic doctor asked me "what foods are you eating?"  Come to find out, there are many migraine food triggers.

If you go to webmd.com and search "migraine triggers", it will come up with a list of foods that could be triggering your migraines.  For me, they are anything with sodium nitrates (preserved meats, cheeses, etc), red wine, caffine, and liver.  Now that I've taken these out of my diet, I rarely have migraines anymore (I use to have 4 to 5 a month).  By simply changing my diet, I have eliminated the need for the crazy pills they wanted me to take.  I occassionally still get them, but they are stress related.

Lots of information, but hopefully this will help you and any other nestie who suffers with migraines.

  • I'm glad to hear that it was not something more serious.

I suffer from Migraines also, ( mine use to get so bad I would get sick) I love dark rooms when I get one. Cold wash clothes on my forehead helps too. And like Jackie I take tylenols when its really bad.

I hope you find something that really helps and GL with managing them.

  • That is great to hear that it is all treatable and you are going to be ok! You had us worried there!

ps- I am so like you- I avoid the doctor at all costs. Most of the time I just let things "run their course." Lesson learned!

  • Oh Johana I'm glad to hear it's just that.  I've had my own eye scare and trust me...since then I've been on top of things.  You will now learn ;)  Did they tell you what could have caused the eye virus?

oh wow, I didn't know food could be a trigger. Thanks for the info. Will go to Webmd. Even though I have a feeling it might be the caffeine, sigh why does coffee have to be so addictive lol

I do avoid doctors at all cost. Guess I'm the opposite of my mother. My mom will think she is dying when all she has is the sniffles. I've always hated that so I do the opposite. I always underplay my symptoms and tell myself it's not a big deal. Some drastic has to happen like uum falling to the ground and stop driving because I can't see things directly in front of me. You know basic big things like that. lmao

Well he did say it was high contagious. He said there are two things. Either I got it from someone else or it was something from the dust particles from when I was moving from my house. I personally thing it was both. Both someone from my office had it, and when I moved a  lot of dust was moved around which is when I noticed how bad it was.

  • Sooo glad  you found out what it was! Didn't know you could get viruses in your eye. Let us know how you're recovering and take some time to rest.

  • Glad to hear that it's treatable :) I'm sure you've learned your lesson on going to the dr when you notice symptoms, so I won't scold you again.

As for the migraines...they really are terrible. But like every one else said, dark rooms and cold compresses really do work wonders!

  • Hey Johanna, glad to hear you're better. warm compresses over your eyes is also soothing.
  • So glad to hear you are doing better. What a scare?!?!?

Please keep us updated after your update. I hope you do not have to drive to much.

  • glad that you were able to go to the doctor and find out exactly what was wrong.  Hope you are starting to feel better.

I had something wrong with my eyes and was also on medication and could not wear my contacts... I can't recall but it was little balls all under my eyelids and on the sides... it cleared up and I am fine! :)

About migraines... I hate them, get them once in a while...what works for me is Excedrin Tension Relief (not the migraine one).   Have one handy just in case you are not home.

  • I hope you continue to feel better.  I just had some terrible migraines a few weeks ago - so I feel your pain.  I couldn't imagine migraines and blurry vision.

  • I'm so glad that it wasn't anything too serious and that he was able to pinpoint both things so well for you. I hope the eye virus goes away ASAP, and like the other ladies have mentioned, now that you know about the migraines, there are tons of solutions out there that you can use till you find what works for you.

Yeah, my body got too use to immitrex.  Excedrin migraine works really well. I don't like Advil Migraine. It didn't help me at all.
