New Future Plan (long)

For the last few months my plan for the future was to go back to school in the fall to get my certificate in non-profit management.  I'd procrastinated sending in my application because I wasn't 100% sure I wanted to do it.  I don't love school.  It's not a fun thing for me and the thought of taking the same classes K took for her PhD worried me.

So last Thursday K and I were out to dinner and I was telling her how I was taking Friday off to finish my application.  I tried to explain to her that the only time I was ever excited to go to class or to learn was when I was taking science course.  My BS is heavy in science.  She asked what I would want to learn and I told her the one thing that keeps coming back up is Nursing. She then asked why the hell I'd want to take public policy classes if I have no interest it in. :-p  And truthfully I was going to do it since my work pays and it's a two semester program.

Once ever year or so I look into nursing school and think of applying.  I knew there was no way K and I could both be in school full time, but now that she's done I can start thinking of what I want to do.   And I think nursing is it.

It's a career that I can do anywhere we may move for K's job and it allows for a flexible schedule once children are around.  I worked in hospitals all throughout college and was an EMT so I know some of what I'm getting into.

I've missed the application deadlines for the fall nursing programs but I'm going to see if I can get in and take some of the general ed classes I might need. Unfortunately because my BS is over 5 years old my classes are unlikely to transfer.  But I'll meet with an admission counselor sometime in the next few weeks and see what I can do to move one step forward.

I'm pretty excited about the change in direction and now just hope I can stick with it. :-)

Re: New Future Plan (long)

  • wow! thats huge!! congrats on a new plan that you can be really excited about and I wish you all the best!

    you'll be a fabulous nurse :)

  • That's really fantastic. Sounds like a great plan for you and it's wonderful that you've found a career path that's such a good fit.
  • Sounds like a great plan. The nice thing is healthcare is always needed where ever you go, thats why I ended up moving to NJ rather than Carol moving to MN. I knew I could find a job with no problems.

    Good luck on your applications!

  • That is great!  My best friend went back to school to become a nurse a few years ago and LOVES it. She said it was the best thing she ever did (for ease of moving, accommodating her 2 kids, and pay.)

    YAY for big decisions!

  • How exciting! You can do that job anywhere and nurses are always in demand, especially in CA, hint, hint. Congratulations on finding what makes you happy :-)
  • It sounds like you are following your heart with this decision. Life is so short, why not do something you WANT to do instead of what others might "expect"? I think this is great and wish you the best with your upcoming studies....

  • Great.  I think nursing is such a great choice.  One of our good friends is an RN an there is such a diversity of jobs from patient care in a hopsital or managment in nursing home care (what our friend does).  Good luck in the new adventure.

  • Sounds like an excellent plan!!Yes

  • If you're looking at Accelerated BSN (second degree) programs, I have some inside-knowledge of the program where I work :)
  • Two, you seem so much more excited about this then you where in your post about the other certificate. I'm sure it's hard to pass up free education, but it seems like nursing is something you'll enjoy which I'm sure would make the cost worth it. Is there any chance you could get some of the general ed courses covered though your employer's program?

  • I know I'm a little late replying, but I just finally got to read this. How exciting! I think it is great that you are able to pursue what you really want to do. Sounds like it will be the perfect portable job. Congrats on this new direction!!
