Chicago-ish Nestie Visiting SC

The hubs and I are going to North Carolina to visit some friends July 16-20.  We want to come down to SC for that Thursday, Friday, and leave early Saturday morning.  We originally wanted to go to Myrtle Beach, but have recently begun thinking other options that may not be so commercial.  My only request is that I get to see a pretty beach and put my feet in the ocean.  (I've never been to the Atlantic.)

Collegues of our friend have recommended Garden City, Murrell's Inlet, Pawley's Island, Hilton Head, Sea Island, Kiawah Island, Seabrooks Island, and Fripp Island.  Do you have any suggestions as to which would be better than the other.  We're also looking to rent a 1 or 2 bedroom suite somewhere.  Any suggestions on where would be a good idea?  We would like a kitchenette area so that we could cook rather than dining out.

Our friends also have a newborn that will be along, if that sways any recommendations.

Thanks ladies!!!

Re: Chicago-ish Nestie Visiting SC

  • We stayed in Surfside a couple weeks ago, which is just north of Garden City/Murrell's Inlet. This area is slightly less congested than Myrtle, but is within easy driving distance (~10-15 miles) to all the attractions of Myrtle.  We drove past Pawley's on the way to Charleston, but didn't stop, although I hear it's beautiful.  We're going to both Hilton Head (4 days) and Charleston (3 days) in July, both of which we love. I'm partial to the Charleston area, though, so of everywhere in SC, I'd suggest renting on either Sullivan's Island or Isle of Palms or getting a hotel in Mt. Pleasant. You can easily find timeshare rentals on Hilton Head that have kitchenettes.  Make sure you get out at least once or twice to enjoy the great seafood and southern cooking that SC has! It's all personal preference, and depends on whether you just want the beach or want to experience some history or shopping, or the glitz and flashy lights of Myrtle.  I'm sure you'll have fun no matter where you choose!
  • I love Garden City.  There's lots to do and it's not as congested (or trashy!) as Myrtle Beach.  Kiawah Island is much quieter, and very nice, although more expensive.  Fripp is great, and if you have golfers in the group, there are some good courses (according to my dad!).
