I'm Coming out to look at apartments!

I am flying out in 2 weeks for my face to face interview! And I am going to take a day or 2 to look at apartments. Can anyone suggest any really nice/pet friendly apartments? I only want to stay for like 6 months so that we can buy a house. I feel weird about buying a house as soon as I move out there. I don't want to spend more than 1k a month. Thank you!

Re: I'm Coming out to look at apartments!

  • I have one friend in Abq that is renting at Villas de La Pravada which is NE pretty close to the interstate.  He has two small dogs and says that it seems pretty safe, hasn't heard anything about break-ins in the area.  They have two pools, one heated, one not.  He also tells me that if you move in you should give them his name so he can get a referal bonus.... so if you want his name you can email me at my user ID at yahoo.com.

Are you staying into the weekend after your interview, as in when we are having our GTG?  Wink

  • Thanks for the response!  We will look into it. Have you ever hear of anyone renting from the beginning on a month-to-month basis, or for 3 months at a time?

As far as my interview.. I will probably be in town from the 11th to the 15th.

  • I guess you will just miss us then....

It has been a long time since I rented, but I bet you can find something that would allow that....

Do you want to rent in an apartment building or do you want to rent a house?

I'm not sure about the whole month-to-month or 3 month lease.  It probably depends on the complex or house owner.  But you might have more luck with a 3-month lease.  I know when I was in grad school most of my friends had pets and they all ended up near Kirtland AFB or in house in the UNM-Pres area because they were more pet-friendly.  I think your biggest issue will be finding a complex with enough yard space to keep a pet  (although I guess it depends on the pet - dog, cat, reptile, etc.).

Most of the complexes are listed in apartments.com or apartmentguide.com .  The rental occupancy rate in ABQ has been falling recently - I've been seeing a lot of move-in specials.

  • Thank you for all the responses.  I really appreciate it! Such a Nice Board!  I'm hoping that I will have luck in finding a short term lease. I'm kinda scared to buy a house from across the country. But I guess it has been done before. I DO have my brother and sister in law out there to help out too. So I guess I have options.  Maybe I'll drive through some developments too while I am out there and maybe I can catch some open houses on that Sunday.

I think buying a ohuse is pretty darn stressful by itself. Just trust your instincts and go on your own time frame.

The idea to drive around on Sunday is a good one.  If you pick up a Sunday Albuquerque Journal, they have a giant ad in the real estate section that shows you the location of all the new developments.  And lots of folks have Sat/Sun open houses so  you can go exploring!
