Need some help in the Williamsburg area....

I am moving to Williamsburg from Massachsetts in about 2 weeks. I am an elementary teacher and need some ideas about districts to apply to. I have applied to Williamsburg-James City, Hampton Roads, New Kent, Charles City,Portsmouth, Norfolk and Newport News so far. I am only just starting my search as we just got out of school here last week. I think I will be willing to drive 30-45 mins (or farther if need to!) I know this is an awful time around here to look for jobs but if anyone has any ideas or inside tips I would love them! Thanks!!

Re: Need some help in the Williamsburg area....

  • You might want to try Hampton also. Good luck finding a job. :)
  • Williamsburg is a great area, you will love it! My husband is an administrator for Hampton City Schools which is probably a 30-40 min. drive from Williamsburg depending on where you live. Make sure you apply to Hampton, York County, and Poquoson. You will want to try to stay on the peninsula if you can to avoid the crazy I-64 traffic. If you have any questions or need any more info let me know! Goodluck with your search!
  • Thanks. I have applied to Hampton City Schools they seem to be the only ones with elementary postings. So is Hampton Roads different than Hampton City? What is the traffic like on I-64? I am trying to figure out the whole area by using google maps! Thanks for your help I know it is better than using the internet.
  • I was just down in Newport News for a two week course and I only had what should have been a 20 min commute each way. Throughout the two weeks I think it took us 20 min two times.

The traffic is horrible. From Williamsburg to about right outside of Hampton there is are only two lanes (each way) but there is so much traffic. If you have to go through the tunnel there is always back up because traffic slows through the tunnel. Today there is a 20 mile back up due to a water main malfunction from the storm last night.

I originally thought I wouldn't mind a 45 min commute from Richmond to Ft. Lee (I just moved here myself) but the traffic from that two weeks in Newport News and the couple of days we drove up to look for houses changed my mind. I commuted 45 min each way in Southern California traffic and this is 10X worse in my opinion.

Sorry so lengthy but I hope it helps. GL with your job search.

  • This entire area is called Hampton Roads... it encompasses all the different cities.

I teach in Virginia Beach.  I think it is the only district not on the penninsula that is hiring.  It may be too far for you though.  www.vbschools.com has the jobs listed.

  • Thanks for all the help. I am shocked about the traffic. When we look on google earth to "see" what the area looks like I have noticed a lot of 2 way roads and such. I guess coming from the Boston area we might need to do some readjusting.
  • I-64 is an absolute mess the closer you get to the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT), especially between 6am-8:30am and then again during rush hour which usually begins around 3pm. The best advice would be to stay on the peninsula (williamsburg, newport news, hampton, poquoson, york county) side of the tunnel. The southside includes va beach, norfolk, chesapeake, portsmouth, suffolk, and smithfield. If you have any more questions let me know & goodluck on the job search!
  • I had a prescreen interview via the phone with a district. The school is located in King and Queen Court House. The woman I spoke with said it is about 45 mins from Williamsburg. Does anyone out there know where this is and if it is within reasonable driving distance or know anything about the area? Thanks.
  • I'm not a teacher, but I do live in Williamsburg.  King and Queen CH is more than an hour away, but I live at the far south end of the burg.  It probably is more like 45 minutes from Toano or Norge.  King and Queen is very rural.
  • Well, this is our offical last weekend up north.  I got a call for a prescreening interview for the week we get down there with the York county schools. I have never been on a presecreen interview. Keep you fingers crossed. I hope I will hear from more....seems like some districts are slowly figuring out the money for next year. I'll keep you all posted!
  • Williamsburg is my hometown. If you are considering distance I say try WJCC, Hampton, Newport News, and York-Poquoson. Anything outside of that you'll be pushing it as far as traffic goes. It's HORRIBLE trying to get through the tunnels. Good Luck!!
