DC March

Okay Ladies,

A good friend of mine, and I are really considering going to the march in October. Is anyone else planning on going? Any hotel recommendations? We aren't really looking for anything fancy, just something cheap that will lets us stay the night.

Also, who else is planning on going? Maybe we could get rooms at the same hotel? Just a thought.

Re: DC March

  • I want to! So badly that you can't imagine.  But I'm supposed to be a wedding that weekend.  However if my work event gets pushed back than I can't be in the wedding and could thus attend.  I feel really really bad for secretly wishing that happens.  I'm going to hell for sure. Embarrassed

  • i'm no help, sorry. it's been years since i've been to dc. actually, i'm not sure i've even been as an adult. we won't be going to the march. she'll be really far along in the pregnancy--just a little more than a month from the due date--so we can't make any travel plans that major. hope you have fun!

  • What airport should I fly into? Is there any ones outside of DC that are cheaper, and I could commute in for the march?

  • There's only a small chance we'd go, and if we did we'd stay w/ my brother so i'm no help there. But as for the airports, BWI will likely be cheaper (gets you into baltimore) but its about an hour cab ride from downtown so its a big PIA.  I think your best bet is Reagan even though its still a bit outside of the city.

  • I hope you come for the march, but I'm biased since I live in DC!  There are three airports near DC: Regan National (DCA), BWI and Washington Dulles (IAD). DCA is the closest, just outside the District, and the only one with a Metro (subway) stop. It also tends to be the most expensive. BWI in Maryland and Dulles in Virginia are each about 1 hour drive from DC, although that varies depending where you're staying. They each also have buses that take you to a metro stop. BWI also has a bus to the commuter train that drops you off right by the Capitol. I would search using airport code WAS and just fly into whatever is cheapest.

If you tell me your budget, I can try to think of hotel options. I often suggest Hotel Harrington for marchers b/c it's very central: http://www.hotel-harrington.com/

  • We live in DC (well, we live near DC and I work in DC.)  I may go downtown with the kids.  I'll have to probably find someone to go with me since L will be in the midst of her class and up to her eyeballs in dissertation writing and I am not taking 2 kids down there solo.

Perhaps I can convince her to go....although she isn't a march type of woman. Tongue Tied

  • This post just sparked a great conversation with my co-director. I was planning on going, but never checked my calendar. Turns out the march is the same weekend as a conference I was supposed to go to and I was bummed. But she just said the march was more important, and now we're both going to this instead. awesome!

So, 2 brides you are welcome to tag along. We'll probably have 2-3 kids with us.

PPs have mostly covered this, but I'll throw my 2 cents in anyway. DCA is definitely closest, BWI is cheapest, and IAD is workable but usually not cheaper than BWI and therefore not worth it for me (I live on the MD side). There are buses from BWI and IAD to the metro system, and there is a metro stop right at DCA.

To get from BWI to the Greenbelt metro station, take the B30. It's an express bus, so it takes just a little over half an hour if there isn't much traffic. I use it frequently and find it pretty convenient. Here's the map & timetable:

To get from IAD to the Rosslyn or L'Enfant stations, take the 5A. Map & timetable:

I don't really know where to suggest you stay, but I would say that if you're not planning to rent a car then staying by a metro station is a good idea. Old Town, Alexandria (VA) is a nice walkable area with little restaurants and shops, and finding a place like that (just outside the city, but still on the metro system) can be less expensive than DC proper.
