Removing Screws from Patella Realignment Surgery?
I asked about this a few months back and I am seriously considering it now.?
I have two concerns:
1. What is the recovery time on this?
My job requires me to be on my feet all day so I would like to know how much time I will have to miss. ?I understand everyone is different, I'm just looking for an estimate.
?
2. Will my knee start dislocating again if the screws are removed?
If so, I am willing to deal with the pain of having the screws!
?Thanks ladies!?

Re: Removing Screws from Patella Realignment Surgery?
I'm not sure which procedure exactly I had done, but it was realignment/reconstruction surgery. (My knee didn't dislocate, it tracked wrong.) I would imagine if it's healed properly, the screws are no longer necessary, but talk to your ortho about that.
Having the screws out was easy-peasy. I had both knees done at once right before a holiday weekend so I had the extra day off to recover - I think I used crutches for a couple days and laid low, but I was back to normal in no time. Waaaaay easier than any other surgery I've ever had, including wisdom teeth
I don't have any advice, but I wanted to say good luck and refer you to this website: http://www.kneeguru.co.uk/KNEEtalk/
I dislocated my patella a month ago, and am now in intensive physical therapy to get it back in shape again and avoid surgery (2nd time I've dislocated it). I've learned a lot reading the posts on that website. The people on there have tons of advice.
Good luck!
As someone who just spent a year in PT school,
A: you will be about 80% better in 8 weeks, depending on how much tissue they have to cut. Depending on how complex the surgery is.
B: It shouldn't be THAT Bad as far as knee surgeries go.
Most of the people I've treated are the basis for my answer:
1 - Recovery will be easier than the initial surgery. Because you're on your feet all day, I would guess that you'll need to be off between 3-5 days (so 1/2 to 1 full week). If you could go back for just a few hours at a time, that would be okay too, it's just 8 hours+ is probably not a viable plan.
2 - No. The screws are only removed once full healing has taken place and the realignment is complete.
More than likely, you'll feel good after screw removal - crutches for a few days, and then not too bad.
I know this is 1 1/2 years old but hopefully someone will reply to this.
I had full blown realignment surgery in August of this year. I'm still having a moderate amount of pain, still sleeping in my knee brace (at 100? so I don't curl up). I asked my ortho doctor at my last follow-up and he said I'd know if it needed to come out due to pain and it would feel like I am sitting on an acorn when on my knees. Well I have a huge bump which I assume is my screw.
So does this sound familiar to anyone and if so did you have it taken out and are better?
