I need your help!

I am planning a weekend away for the hub's bday. Has to be somewhere in FL, (no Miami or Ft. Lauderdale, we are from there and don't want to have to see family) but I have no idea where to go? I was thinking the Sanibel/Captiva area, or the Keys, any ideas? I need someplace with lots to do besides the beach (kayaking, hiking, we could bring our bikes), and some super good local resturants.. I am pretty much open to whatever sounds good for a 4 day weekend.

What do you think? I want to surprise him and do all the planning for once.

  • We stayed at a place on Siesta Key over by Sarasota a few years ago.  It was next to a state park area (within walking distance) with bike trails and kayak-friendly mangroves/intercoastal water areas.  The beaches are beautiful but we kayaked several days and it was really fun and felt very secluded.  It was only 5-10 minutes from the St. Armands Circle, which has tons of little restaurants and shops.  Might be worth checking out!  I'll post again if I think of the exact name of the place, but there are lots of hotels in the area that I'm sure you could find online.  Have fun! :)
  • We took a weekend trip to Sanibel and Captiva earlier this year and had a fantastic time! We had a toddler in tow, so I can't comment on activities outside of the beach...but they had some fun, laid back restaurants!

  • We just got back from Ft. Myers Beach for our anniversary and it was awesome. We took a day trip to Sanibel. Sanibel is very quiet we are glad we stayed in Ft. Myers Beach and did a day trip. It was only a 10-15 min. drive from Ft. Myers to Sanibel so close enought to go back and forth. There is a really good nature preserve in Sanibel that is supposed to be good for hiking. Lots of people were biking in both places. We both loved it and would go back in an instant. We stayed at the Pink Shell in Ft. Myers is was a little "resorty" but we loved it because there was a beach in front but you still had the pool. Let me know if you want food recs or anything else if you decide on that area

Ditto to this! I love, love, love Siesta Key!?

  • Palm beach!! I'm from Jupiter, and the beach there is wonderful, and you can kayak on the loxahatchee river. There are a ton of historic sites you could check out, as well as amazing shopping and dining.

    St. Augustine is fun too!

  • St. Augustine is always beautiful. How about staying at a B&B and hitting up the beach? There are great restaurants and historic sites to see.

The Columbia Restaurant is wonderful. The St. Francis Inn B&B is also really great. Have a great time whereever you go!
