looking for a butcher

Can anyone recomend a good butcher in Portland. Hopfully one that does meat bundles. I finally got a deep freezer and am hoping to save some money by buying meat in bulk. I live in the gateway area, so one in the area would be best but I am willing to travel for a good one.

I've heard of people getting meat strait from a farm as well. I don't really know how that works, but if anyone has sugestions like that I would be interested in hearing about that as well.

TIA

Re: looking for a butcher

  • My inlaws know the guys at Gartners(?) and they buy thier meat there, NO idea where it's at though!
  • I emailed a friend of ours who hunts and stocks up on lamb. This is what he wrote back:

"Wild game or livestock? Portland or elsewhere? The meat is brought to the butcher or it's on the hoof out at ye old farm? Any specialty cuts (like "The California Ribeye") or smoked meats wanted? What kind of meat - some won't do pork, for example. Or cats.

If Portland - Gartner's on NE Killingsworth.  No question.  They do it all. You can get some custom cuts at Phil's in uptown shopping center but it's their meat and you're directing the cut and wrap.

Pendleton area -Mike's Mobile or C&M Sausage Company. The former will go to the site and take the animal from hoof to freezer.  The latter does a really really nice job right down to vacuum sealing the burger in 1# blocks so no freezer burn if you store it a while."
  • Gartner's Meat Market is the best in town, take 82nd Avenue all the way to Killingsworth and turn left, it's about 2 minutes down the road.

Original Steer Market is on 122nd-ish and Division, they are good too, but closed on Sundays.

  • My friend added this when I told him you were planning to stock your freezer:

Tell her to go to Gartner's and buy one of their package deals. You can buy all combos up to an entire cow.
  • Gartners! Try to go on a weekday to avoid crowds.

If you're interested in buying cow strait from the farm, look up "Community Supported Agriculture" (CSA) in google, etc. We get ours from family in Montana, so unfortunately I can't give you a name.
