I think my boss is mad at me :(

Yesterday I sent my boss an email requesting today off. He denied it stating it was too late of a request and operational need. Fine, no problem.  I was in training with his boss at the time, and he asked me what the answer was, and I told him that I was denied per operational need, etc...

I guess his boss then sent him a not so nice email, indicating that hard workers should not be scrutinized, blah blah blah... Soon after, I get an email approving my day off and asking me to call my boss ASAP.

I get ahold of him this morning (while I'm already at work), and he says that he felt I was trying to undermine his authority, etc... and I explained my point of view, etc... and we seemed to come to an understanding... but I have this bad feeling he now thinks I'm a troublemaker and will just run to his boss any time I don't like what he says... *sigh*- definitely wasn't intended, and I tried to tell him that was not my intention... but I have this feeling that in the back of his head he feels he has to be "careful" with me.  He has only been my supervisor for 3 months, so I hate to start a rocky working relationship like this.

Ok, vent over, I don't have anybody to talk to about this right now and I'm kinda bothered about how the whole thing went down. Thanks for reading- any advice to smooth this over would be appreciated!

Re: I think my boss is mad at me :(

  • O, I am so sorry.  I really don't have an advice, but I would feel the same way like you do.  Hopefully this will all pass, and your boss will see you had no bad intentions telling his boss.
  • Thanks :)  I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and know it will all play out over time... all 3 of us train together next week, so it should be interesting to say the least!

  • You know, I hate workplace drama. Usually misunderstandings are what cause conflicts between people. I have 2 other people in my department who hate me because they want to believe things about me that are not true. They have made my life at work hell. I hope it all blows over for you because it sucks having to work in hostile environment the way I do. GL!

And I really am not good with giving advice, but I am good at listening.Smile

  • Thanks to both of you! :)

I hate workplace drama--- I even told my boss I try to avoid conflict and drama at all costs- because it does nothing for all persons involved!  Hopefully he had an open mind and listened to what I had to say--- but who knows- what he said and what he was thinking might be completely conflicting.

Thanks for listening and for your advice- it is really appreciated because I'm sitting here mulling over things, hoping I said the right thing!

  • I'm sorry =(

Your boss is totally overreacting. His boss simply asked what the response was and you simply told him what your boss said.

The fact that the boss's boss emailed him and encouraged him to give you the day off tells me that the real problem is between the two bosses, and you are an unfortunate victim.

    You didn't do anything wrong!

  • I hope it all works out! Thankfully you had a chance to explain your side of the story.

Seriously... drama is ridiculous and doesn't do anything for anybody... sorry they're so crappy!

thank you all for the advice... I feel a little better now :)

  • Ugh, situations like that are the worst. The only thing you can do now is just go on and be the good employee you usually are. Hopefully he'll realize over time that it was just that situation that went down wrong.

My guess is, if his boss wrote him a "not nice" email over just your one request, than chances are there was tension between them already and your boss is kinda taking it out on you.
