PDX to Sun Valley, ID by car?

Anyone know appx how many hours?

We're planning a trip this summer with friends & are trying to decide whether to drive or fly.  If it were just the 2 of us we'd totally fly, no question, but with DD we're not sure which would be more of a hassle - driving or flying, considering there aren't many (affordable) direct flights between here and SV.  If we take a flight that connects in LA like we're looking at, then total travel time incl time in airports might just = that of driving, however I HATE long drives, so I don't know...  Then there's the whole question of whether or not to buy DD her own seat on the plane, etc.  *sigh*  Nothing is straightforward anymore with a child...

Re: PDX to Sun Valley, ID by car?

  • How long will you be staying there? The flying sounds more of a hassle than driving. Can you split it up into two sections? Leave PDX in the evening and drive 4-5 hours (making small stops in between to change diapers / feed), find a hotel and sleep, drive early morning the next day the rest of the day.
  • Hmmm I hate being in the car for long trips too but when a direct flight isn't avaliable I would probably go with driving. I'm not a parent but it seems like it would be a hassel to fly with all babies stuff! It would probably be easier to stop along the way if you drive or break it up into a few days like Esther said. :)  We ended up driving to a friend's wedding in Montana because we would've had to fly to an airport a few hours away then rent a car and drive to the wedding location. Good luck!!

  • I think the road trip would be a lot less hassle than flying.  At least then you won't have to deal with carryons, lay overs, and possible delays.

  • Hi Jenny!

I think it would take about 10 hours. I haven't driven there, but I did drive to Coer d'Alene which took about 8. It's pretty easy freeway driving, at least all the way through Oregon. You could stop in Baker City for the night if you don't want to do it all in one shot.

I bet the entire flying process would take longer than 10 hours. Bleah.

  • PDXPhotoGrl, your siggy is busting me up! I heart you!! So glad Kurt & I are back in the game this summer!!!
  • ME TOO. We really missed you guys. Did you spot your cameo in my wedding bio? I also think the back of Kurt's head is prominently featured in another photo, but I can't be sure.

  • It's about 6-8 from Sunriver to Boise (per my parents who go somewhat frequently) so they figure about 10-12 hours to Sun Valley from PDX.
