Any teachers here?

My husband and I will (most likely) be moving to the NOVA area - not sure where yet, but so far we are looking at Woodbridge, Stafford, Fredericksburg, Bristow, Manassas, Triangle, and Dumfries.  I am dual certified (in my state) in elementary and special education.  I read that I could get a provisional certification in VA that lasts for 3 years in order for me to get my standard certification set (taking tests, paperwork, etc.).  I just have to take the two Virginia tests (I already took the Praxis) so hopefully it won't take too long.

I already have an interim teaching position for half a year where I live now, but I'm looking for VA jobs in either elementary or special education.  I doubt I will be able to find a job for September this last minute so I'm also interested in mid-year positions.  Does anyone know what districts are hiring this late or is your district/school hiring?  I'm open to both public and private schools.  Thanks!

Re: Any teachers here?

  • Hi. We are moving to VA to a few weeks from MA and I got my Elementary VA certificate a few months ago. Do you have years of teaching experience? I have been teaching for more than the requirement so my certificate transfered. I am not sure about the 3 year lic. We are also both in the same boat looking for jobs. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
  • I am currently in Southwest VA, but I know that Fairfax County & Prince William County are almost always hiring for elementary and spec. ed. up there.  I came from New York and had to do the provisional licensure thing too.  Those tests seemed very easy to me (the VCLA & VRA)!  Anyway, you may want to look into jobs for September (if you wanted one that soon) because a lot of the districts waited or are waiting until the last minute due to budget cuts!  I just got my job last week :)  Good luck!
  • Stafford lists their postings online! HTH.
  • I have a last minute interview and I'm hoping I get the job after the long drive and overnight hotel stay!!

To the poster who just got hired, did it seem to "bother" them that you weren't certified in VA yet?  I guess not because you got the job, but I'm just curious how competitive it is to get a job in some areas that I mentioned.  Thanks!

  • I work for Spotsylvania Co and live in Fredericksburg. I think they probably have all of their hires made for the beginning of this year, but check out their website frequently http://www.spotsylvania.k12.va.us/ they list their openings on it. Its a good district, but they have been having budget problems (probably along with everyone else.) I went to school in PA and was licensed there. I took another Praxis series test (not the 2 that had been required in PA but a different one) and the VA Reading Assessment test - both fairly easy although of course it stinks to spend the money. In case you do get hired here, page me. I'm a elementary teacher at Courthouse Road.
