Hi everyone,
I am in NJ and am looking to relocate to Florida within the next year. We are looking at the Tampa Bay area and wasn't sure if this was the correct board for that area. Orlando is also a possibility, and surrounding towns.
Can anyone give me any advice on safe, neighborhood-feeling towns with stores and shops closeby? I don't want to live in a rural area, but am not looking to have everything down the street either. I also have a two year old son. We are looking to rent initially to see if we like the area.
Thank you so much.
Kathy
Re: Possible relocation
Check out the West Coast Florida for the Tampa area.
Orlando, depends on where you will be working (east side v. west side). Orlando is a pretty large area.
If you choose Orlando, this is the right board. There are many "areas" within Orlando, and as the previous poster mentioned, you will want to consider the area you are working in when looking at where you will want to live. Commutes can be a nightmare. I-4 is the main artery and can be awful during rush hour. The 408 toll road can also be bad.
Several areas around Orlando might meet your requirements. Just outside of downtown Orlando is College Park, where I live. It's very family oriented, and feels like a town within a town. You have everything you could need within close proximity. It is an older area, and the homes are mostly built in the 1950's so they are smaller, but many have been completely renovated. The rental market is excellent right now, so you should be able to find something. It has good schools, lots of parks, restaurants, grocery store, hardware store, and all of the different mom and pop shops you would need.
Winter Park is also a nice area, not as "walkable" as College Park, but very nice. There is a wide range of homes there, from not too expensive to VERY expensive. Again the rental market is good. Both of these areas would allow you to commute to most areas without having to get on either of the major roads.
Other areas that are a little bit outside of the core Orlando area that might require you to commute a small bit but are very nice are Maitland, Altamonte Springs, Longwood, Lake Mary (all to the north) and Waterford / Lake Nona to the east.
Hope this helps. Please consider finding a job before you relocate. The job market is the pits down here right now, so if you relocate before you find something, it could take you awhile. Good luck.
I second checking the West Coast board. Where in NJ are you?? I grew up in Cherry Hill and moved down here last year. I highly recommend Clermont (about a half hour away from Orlando) :-)
Good luck!
