The IRS has responded to reports that some people are getting the wrong stimulus checks. And, they admit the problem. But, the IRS says it's working to correct it.

Despite receiving envelopes addressed to them, some people are finding the checks inside are for someone else.

Pat McKinney said her husband was already talking about how to spend their stimulus money when she noticed the letter didn't have their name on it.  It was for someone else in their Blue Springs, Mo., neighborhood.

"My first concern was, where's my letter," McKinney said.

"I just want to know if my letter went to someone else and will they be honest and give it back," Sandy Spear from Excelsior Springs said.

It happened to Spear and her husband, too and at least five other people who contacted FOX 4 in Kansas City.

"I don't know whether he has our letter and we have his or someone else in Excelsior Springs has our letter, we don't know that," Spear said.

"They've got a pile of envelopes here and letters there and sticking it in without looking," McKinney said.

McKinney's concerned about privacy, hers and the persons whose name and last four Social Security digits now sit on her kitchen table.

"It's scary and it makes you wonder the person stuffing them, did they read English," Spear said.

Both tried to call the IRS, but couldn't talk to a person to find out what to do.

The good news is McKinney already has her check direct deposited as of Monday.  But Spear has no idea when her check will be in the mail.

On Wednesday, the IRS responded with the following statement:

"During the printing process one of our printing contractors failed to detect an error that resulted in statements being mailed to taxpayers containing another taxpayer's name, address and the last four digits of their social security number.

"We are determining the number and location of the taxpayers that have been impacted by this error and will share more information as it becomes available.

"The IRS takes its obligation to protect taxpayer privacy very seriously. We have taken action and will continue to work with the contractor to ensure that no further mail out problems occur.

"Anyone who receives such an erroneous statement should return it to the IRS either in person to their closest Taxpayer Assistance Center or by mail to the IRS return address printed on the mailing.

"If they are concerned about the IRS thinking they no longer lives at the address on the envelope, they can write a short note that explains why the notice is being returned."
