Learning a new language?

Hi ladies!

I recently reconnected with my family in Austria and I'm kicking myself for not studying German in school. I now want to learn it so I can talk with them a bit more and make it easier for them, but I'm not sure where to start.

It was so easy learning it in school and I enjoyed it, but all of these years later, I'm afraid, especially since German is so much harder than Spanish!

Do you have recommendations for local resources - schools, programs, etc -- or anything online? How did you learn your new language and what do you recommend for me?

Move along, nothing to see here.....

Re: Learning a new language?

  • IUPUI has weekend courses in different languages, I know this only b/c one of DH's co-workers teaches Mandarin there.  I have heard good things about Rosetta Stone but have never heard of it.
  • I heard good things about Rosetta Stone too. They have a demo online and it looks like it's very user friendly and you can learn at your own pace. ? ? ? ? I thought about it for my hubby so he can learn Filipino (my language). The only drawback is it's not that cheap. ?Good luck!
  • So ironic, I took German all through school and am kicking myself for not taking Spanish! I took some German at IUPUI and they do have a great program--though I took courses as a traditional student, and not the weekend programs.

Also, I have heard awesome things about roseta stone. One friend used it to learn Italian for a trip, and another used it to learn medical Spanish, as she is a Dr.

Also, IMHO, you can pick up German quickly as there are a lot of cognates with English--words that sound the same in both languages. GOOD Luck!!!

  • Ditto IU or IUPUI. And German isn't a difficult language. :)
