No maternity leave for me

I just found out yesterday that sparrow does not offer maternity leave for nurses.

I can file for FMLA and get up to 12 weeks off without pay.

With my paid time off, I will have approximately 1 month off after giving birth, before I have to start doing heavy lifting and be on my feet 12 hours a day.

 Awesome.

Re: No maternity leave for me

  • This is what my company does, since I don't have insurance through them.  (this is taken from an e-mail from the HR person)

We allow 2 weeks off prior to the anticipated due date and 6 weeks off after the actual delivery date.  If it's a C-section, we allow 8 weeks off after the delivery.  We may allow up to 12 weeks total off if the dr. says it's a complicated pregnancy and you need to be off work due to complications.  The Family Medical Leave Act only allow up to 12 weeks for any disability.
Even though you have opted out of our health insurance, you are eligible for Short Term Disability.  You would receive a weekly check for 60% of your base weekly pay for the period of time your dr. says you need to be off work.

So, it might be something looking into.

     Hope this helps!

  • My HR lady told me that I"m screwed. I'm going to appeal and see if I can get short term disability.
  • Do you pay for short term disability?  My company does not pay anything toward maternity leave either, but I have short term disability set up through my insurance so I should get 60% pay for 6 weeks.  And also I have lots of sick and vacation time accured so I will use that to pay for the rest.  Can you use your vacation/sick time?

  • Thats what I am going to do, unfortuntaly that gives me less than one month. I calculated how much time off I would have by November.
  • That stinks.... Im sorry..

You should check into policies you can buy.. not sure if you can get them if you are already PG but there are places you can buy separate insurance to cover maternity leave and from what I remember from friends.. its not very expensive and at least pays up to 60% of lost wages.. Worth looking at if you want more time off then you vacation time!

  • Unofortunately, most of us take unpaid maternity leaves.  I am taking 8 weeks of unpaid leave....ow my_ass!

This will not work now, but my husband and I were looking into aflac when I finally got into the family way (hehe!).  We were looking at a combination of plans....one was a medical or hopsital plan(don't remember) that paid like 1500 for a vaginal delivery and a bit more for a c-section.  Then there was another that would pay short term disability. We ended up not getting them because they only pay on pregnancy and disability(maternity leave) if you have the policy for ten calendar months prior to delivery.  So, 40 weeks is not 10 calendar months:(

We will be getting set up for this before we have our second child.

  • That sucks, I'm really sorry.  Good luck with the appeal!
