Door County

My husband and I are celebrating our 5 year anniversary this year with a weekend in Door County.  If anyone has reccommendations about places to eat, things to see or do, I would really appreciate it.  Oh, and I am pregnant, so winery tours are not a good option.

Thanks!!

Re: Door County

  • 1 - Don't stay at Sand Bay Beach Resort.  HORRIBLE experience there (who FORGETS they have people coming to check in??)  We stayed at the Birchwood Lodge (Sister Bay, so it's up there) and it was fantastic, but that was years ago.  I've also heard good things about Stone Harbor Resort right in Sturgeon Bay.

2 - They have a drive in theatre which is really kind of fun to go to.  Skyway Drive-In is all kind of retro, which is fun.

3 - Can you do horseback riding? Kurtz Corral was really nice when we went there for our anniversary last year.

4 - Door County Fireboat Cruise

    5 - Sail Door County

    6 - Folklore Theatre

7 - You could google Door County artists or galleries to see what you come up with.  They are ALL OVER up there and usually the galleries are open often.

8 - Door County's Things to Do site also lists links to tours and various other ideas.

  • My two fav places to eat in DC are T Ashwells (Ellison Bay) and Sage (sturgeon bay). LeRoy's is a cute coffee shop and Good Eggs is fun for breakfast.
  • We were married in Door County, so I researched (and have stayed at) just about every B & B and inn up there.  Hands down our favorite is The Chanticleer.  The only negative is that it is near Sturgeon Bay, so a little bit of a drive up the peninsula.  But it is awesome.  There are literally sheep grazing outside your window!

Lots of great dining up there--including Waterfront, Mission Grille, and Alexander's.  Fish Creek is great for shopping.  We loved sailing with Sail Door County.  Take the ferry over to Rock Island and bike around.  Much less crowded, and so beautiful!

  • Al Johnsons has the very best swedish pancakes.  They also have goats on the roof when it is nice out!  JJ's La Puerta has great mexican, be sure to try their fried ice cream!  The White Gull Inn is a romantic bed and breakfast.  Also you must take a hike at Peninsula State Park!
  • Dh and I have gone up to Door County for our anniversaries a few years now and we always stay at a Bed and Breakfast.  We've stayed at the White Lace Inn and the Black Walnut Guest House...both are very nice and in Sturgeon Bay.  I preferred the Black Walnut Guest House only because the room we stayed in had a private balcony...a fireplace, and a whirlpool tub in the room, and breakfast was delivered to your room and you were able to eat in privacy...just DH and myself!  Dh and I ate at Inn At Kristofers in Sister Bay one time.  It is a very nice, upscale resturant for an anniversary dinner.  We also enjoy having ice cream at Wilson's Restaurant in Ephraim.   I love Door County...and there's so much to see/do.  We've gone on a sailboat ride around the harbor....we've seen a play in Pennisula State Park by the Pennisula Players and gone hiking through various parks.  Shopping is always fun too.  Happy Anniversary and have fun!!!
  • Coming in late on this, but I just got back from a week in Door County and had a wonderful time (check out my blog for pics).  I would highly recommend:

    1. The Cookery (Fish Creek) - Hands down the best meal we had in DC.  Amazing food, lovely ambiance and it's newly remodeled after a fire last year.  You must eat here!

    2. Kayak tour through the Bay Shore Outdoor Store (locations in Sister Bay and Ephraim)- we did the cave point tour on the Lake Michigan side and it was AMAZING!

    3. Bay Breeze Resort (Ephraim) - Excellent place to stay, nice private beach and outdoor pool, good rates for peak season, wonderful hospitality

    4. Pelletier's (Fish Creek) - Great fish boil, decent prices

    5. Orchard Country Market & Winery (Fish Creek) - Besides the wine tasting, you can pick your own cherries and buy a ton of great foodstuffs (fresh fruits, cheese curds, smoked fish, jams/jellies, pies, etc.)

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the places I recommended. Have a great trip!

  • I forgot about this until I stumbled on your post again...Do you guys like to cook?  DH and I took a class here a few years ago and had a really fun time.  http://www.savoryspoon.com/
