To pierce or not pierce?

IL's flipped out when SIL had her 2-yr-old daughter's ears pierced. Just wondering what everyone thinks about piercing a child's ears because I know a lot of people are staunchly against it, but in some cultures it's a common practice. WDYT?

Re: To pierce or not pierce?

  • To each their own.

I "think" when/if we have a daughter I'll wait until she wants them pierced. It's a right of passage into becoming a little lady. :)

  • Yes. In some cultures it's common for a baby's ears to be pierced.

Mary will not get her ears pierced until she is old enough to ask/beg me.

  • Personally, when/if we have a girl I will wait until she decides she wants to have her ears pierced. My mom made me wait until I wanted to do it and could take care of them (keep it clean) myself.

  • I'll do Sarah's when she asks for it and is old enough to care for them herself.  My mom wanted me to wait until I was 16...HA!  I lied to the jeweler when I was 13 and got them done with a friend!

I agree with this. When/If I have a daughter I will wait until she is older and wants to have it done.

I had my ears pierced at 9 and they slowly ripped out of my earlobes over a few months. It was extremely painful. My mom and I both have extremely thin connective tissue in our ears, and the same thing happened to her.

  • I agree with all the girls and think that piercing a babies ears is kinda selfish. Its not good for the baby. She can pull them out and hurt herself. Its all about the parents and them wanting her to look more "girly" etc...
  • It is very, very common in my culture at least back in the old days.  I know I got my ears pierced before I was a year old.  I told DH I might have our DD's pierced early on, too, and he wasn't thrilled with the idea.  Oh, first time I said "DD"!  Exciting!Big Smile

Oh, it was a joke that I said I am getting her ears pierced early on.  I just like to freak him out.  I also told him I will enter her to those beauty contests.  Huh huh huh! I like scaring him.

  • I honestly have no opinion about it. I was 2 months old when my mom had my ears pierced. I almost never wear earrings (the piercing is still there if I do want to wear them) and probably would never have asked for them.

I just thought IL's and dh overreacted. This was one of the few times where I actually sided with SIL on anything. They all said she was wrong to "mutilate" her little girl, but I brought up the fact that they aren't opposed to circumcision.

  • I had mine done when I was a few months old
If we have a daughter I'll probably peirce em when she is a baby Im sure its less painfull than a circumsision (sp?) although I know one is for medical/cleanliness reasons and the other is superficial
but then again I might not want to put her thru that Confused hmmm thats a tuff one

  • I think mutilation is a bit of an extreem term for it, but personally I wouldn't get my baby's ears pierced. I don't really see a point to it. When I got mine done it was a big deal. Like Brandy said, a right of passage thing. I'd want to give my daughter that chance or the choice not to get it done at all.

  • I'm the 100th person who is going with Brandy :).
  • My mom had mine pierced when I was a day old, and I am glad she did!  I would have been too chicken to have them pierced in elementary/middle school.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
