solo travel: xposted w/ Travel board

Hey chicas,

I just posted this to the Travel board, but I thought you might have some brilliant thoughts to share:

I have a week of vacation that I need to use in September but my honey can't get the time off. :( The silver lining is, I think it'll be a great opportunity to have the kind of transformative experience that makes solo travel so great. But, where should I go? Where would you go?

When I travel alone I typically like:

* yoga or contemplative retreats

* reading and people watching in quiet cafes

* wandering around beautiful walkable cities

* eating yummy food in single-friendly restaurants

* lounging around looking at nature (beach, mountains etc)

* shopping for books or clothes

* ethnically diverse communities

* places where a single woman won't be dangerously harassed (I can handle some minor harassment, but I don't want to be seriously afraid or worried during the day)

Any ideas would be awesome. I'd like to travel outside of the East Coast and preferably outside the U.S. TIA!

  • what a great opportunity! Your list screams Italy to me (esp. Florence or the Almafi coast) - but I might also be biased b/c i'm dying to go.  London might be another great choice, I LOVED it there and always felt very safe with more than enough to do.  Inside the US I might hit up San Fran or Arizona (Sedona area).

  • My uncle and aunt went to Tassajara Zen Center in the Ventana Wilderness near Big Sur, and had nothing but raves for it. They said it was one of the most spiritually fulfilling and physically rejuvenating trips they'd ever taken.

  • I went to Italy for my last solo trip, several years ago. It was a great trip, and I'm tempted to just recreate that experience. Tassajara Zen Center looks so awesome. I've never heard of it. It appears to be closed to the public during the Fall, but now I want to go visit it for another trip.

    Interestingly, the process of planning this trip has made me aware of how much privillege I have as a femme-y woman traveling alone. There are so many places that it's not safe or pleasant to visit as a couple--or places where we'd feel stifled or closeted.  Traveling alone, I'm only now realizing how much freedom I have to go (almost) anywhere. It's bittersweet.

    Big Sur is beautiful!

    What about Amsterdam? I really loved the city.  It is full of life, lots of outdoor cafes, and beautiful streets to stroll.
