Cookie baking FAIL

I felt like baking cookies last night, and I only had ingredients on hand for sugar cookies. I started mixing the dough, and I was so excited and wanted to make cutout cookies and decorate them. I was going to send some to work with DH today and all his coworkers would ooh and ahh over my stellar baking abilities.

That is, until I forgot that I have NEVER been successful making sugar cookie cutouts. My dough never gets to the consistency for rolling out! No matter how long I chill it, it stays the consistency of drop cookies. When I'm in the mood for cutouts, drop cookies just won't do. I don't get it. I've used Betty Crocker's recipe and my grandma's recipe (and her cookies always turn out perfect). I've even called my grandma while making the dough to make sure I'm doing everything right. I use real butter, I follow the directions. And I'm disappointed every time.

Any thoughts? Ideas? Tricks or secret ingredients? Am I alone here?

Re: Cookie baking FAIL

  • That happens to me sometimes too, just keep adding teaspoons of flour to the dough until it is the consistency to roll out. Thats my trick.

HTH. and youre right drop cookies just aren't the same when you want cutouts.

  • where does your grandma live???  remember that the humidity in the air will affect your baking.  just like red said...keep adding flour.  sometimes you must do a test-run to see how they turn out.  i had to do this w/my grandma's corn bread b/c she passed away and no one knew the recipe.  i had to remember from childhood (over 15 yrs ago) how she made it.  i think i attempted it like 5 times before getting it right!!!

if you ever EVER want to have a baking GTG let me know...we can test out recipes. :)

  • My concern with adding the flour is that it'd make the cookies turn out stiff. Grandma lives in Illinois, and I didn't think about the humidity, but I tried to make these cookies when I still lived in Illinois and had the same result.

And a baking GTG would be fun! I have two other cookie recipes from my other grandma that never turn out the way she makes them. I think she purposefully left out an integral ingredient, though, because no one in my family can make the cookies come out right. She's not spilling her secret, though.

That's pretty funny!!! The thing w/my grandma's recipes is that she didn't use measuring!!! Crazy lady I tell ya....everything was dependent on the consistency.  How she would figure it out I have no clue.  And why is it that when Grandma's make stuff...it comes out better than when we make it???  I always think about that.

Ok...let's def plan for a cooking GTG, just let me know where.

  • sorry the cookies didn't turn out good. this is the recipe I use for cutout cookies and have had success with. However, yes humidity and temp is a factor so make sure the house is cool.

    1 cup butter softened

    1 cup sugar

    1 egg

    2 1/2 C flour

    2 Tbsp OJ

    1 Tbsp vanilla

    1 tsp baking powder

combine butter, sugar and egg. beat at medium speed until creamy. reduce speed to low, add flour, OJ, vanilla and baking powder. beat until well mixed. Divide the dough into thirds and wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.

heat oven to 400 degrees, roll out dough and cut away!

    bake for 6-10 minutes.

We can do it at my house! I'm just not sure when. Things are a little nutty these next few weeks, but we can plan something once things settle down.

    We can try audioslave's recipe!

  • Def Melissa....that will be soo much fun!!!
  • Don't know how to fix your recipe, but think that having a baking gtg is genious!! lol

Let me know when it is. :-)

Absolutely! Everyone is welcome. It will be fun. I'll think of some times that would work out well for me, then post something to get everyone's input.

  • I'll find some low carb yummy things to bake. =)
  • It's been awhile since I've made sugar cookies - usually bake them around the holidays. Yum. Was wondering if your baking powder or flour was past it's expiration date....minor thing, not sure it would lend itself to the consistency, but just a thought.

How bout some chocolate macadamia cookies? I could really go for one right now. :)
