Would anyone plan their moves (buying a house, renting an apartment, ect.) based on what state they'd be in?
Or do you just find the best thing in the area regardless of whether it falls in MO or KS side??

I think both sides have plenty to offer as far as good schools, good neighborhoods, good restaraunts and shopping. I think you could easily find things you love on either side. It is easy to drive from one to the other, too. I am on the MO side and it is not uncommon for me to drive to Oak Park Mall or the Legends if I need something.
I guess if it came down to which side to live on, I'd consider where you are working and keep them the same.... i.e. live and work in MO so you only have to pay taxes on one side. Just a thought...
DH and I both grew up in Olathe and just knew that we wanted to raise our kids in JoCo. I have nothing against any other part of the city because every place has advantages and disadvantages but JoCo is just closer to all of our family. If I didn't grow up in Olathe I probably would want to stay out of JoCo.
Why would you want to stay out of JoCo if you hadn't been raised there? Just curious.
There's a kind of prejudice attached to growing up in JoCo, not that it's always true. Of course, there's definitely a prejudice attached to growing up in Wyandotte county but I lived. :P

I agree with both of these comments:
Growing up in JoCo you're a preppy *** and think you're better then everyone else (there are still very much parts of JoCo that think this way). I even grew up in Olathe which is pretty south - we called ourselves the 'armpit of JoCo'. I really like the area, great school (3 of the top school districts in the country), great parks, great shopping, great everything but there is a stigma attached. Plus taxes are high - so you pay for all the 'greats'. There are other good school districts around KC - if it's not that important for you I would save your money and buy a house elsewhere, oftentime you can get more for your $ because people aren't as 'proud' of it.
Being from JoCo I would NEVER go to 'the Dot' (so maybe I did use to be a ***) - it was on the opposite side of the spectrum. It's come a LONG way with the Speedway and Legends, and Schliterbahn but back in the day those things weren't there - I think the stigma is still attached for some.
I think that both places are wonderful places to live these days and both have come a long way in the last 15-20 years. You just have to decides what you want to be close to and what is really important for you.
My mom and her brother that live there both live in JoCO, in OP, and it does seem really nice there, I guess it makes sense that there would be some stigma/hostility towards the area, I just figured the ammenities would make up for it... ha! I grew up in rural MO, (if Olathe is the armpit of JoCO, my area is the nostril of the entire state

The only thing I would be concerned about was racial diversity... it would be nice for the someday (a long time from now) kid(s) i might have to grow up without being completely surrounded by WASPs. I heard that Olathe was somewhat diverse.. is that true?
Olathe is OK diversity-wise but it is still mainly WASP. I went to Olathe East which was considered the 'rich' Olathe school (or was 10 years - now there's ONW) and I would say 95% of my class was WASP. I really think it's getting better though.
I live on the MO side and after living in Manhattan, KS. I like gas being around 8-10 cents cheaper per gallon. Tags and taxes for vehicles are cheaper even with the hassle of the inspection. For us, we really enjoy being so close to the airport so we can help friends out who fly in there. I found several stores I like to shop at at zona rosa but don't get me wrong we will drive to Legends and Oak Park mall once in a while too. I enjoy being so close to City Market so I can go down and buy fresh produce.
I have a guy friend who refuses to live outside of JOCO just because of the income/better than everyone else (if that is how you want to put it) aspect that comes with it. Even though it would be more logical for him to live around us because he works on plaza and had a drive 35+ minutes just to living in Johnson Co.
Oooh, the city market! I've heard about it and wanted to visit. We have a farmer's market in CoMO, however, and I haven't made it there yet, so i'm taking baby steps.
I didn't realize that gas/taxes were cheaper on MO side than KS, i'll have to remember that, thank you for the information.
That extra 10 cents goes to roads, you can tell IMO. Not necessarily a reason to move to the KS side but it does save a little on care maintenance.

I sound like such a spoiled brat, and I don't want to, but what I really want is to get into the Blue Valley school district. My cousins go there, and my brother starts in the fall, and that high school course book is pretty astounding.
Of course, the perfect house at the perfect price could get me living anywhere in the area.
I totally hear you. I'm being a stoiled b*tch while we're looking for our new house. We're probably moving to OP which is in the BV school district (I have an aversion to the Olathe school district-I think because I went there).

No, i'm studying advertising/pr. I'm just really concerned about good public education. I don't want to pay for private schools, but after the schools FI and I went to in rural MO, I want to make sure that my future children have better opportunities. If I can make that happen with a slightly higher house payment & taxes, well then, hell yes!

There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong about the Olathe school district it's just a personal preference for me. I know 'too much' about the district (or should I say how the district used to be). I have crazy, I assume, unreal judgements about every school in the district and just think it's better for me to keep out. I won't share them because I'm sure none of them are true (are or were). The Olathe School district was great, I learned a lot, and was well prepared for college.
MrsW, funny that you guys called yourselves the armpit of JoCo, I went to school in DeSoto, and we called ourselves that! Probably way more true about DeSoto than Olathe.
I think you will definitely find more diversity on the MO side, IMO.
I moved to Shawnee my freshmen year of high school, and it is insane the attitude people have about being from JoCo-it's a total stereotype, but true for a lot of people. But, like Mrs.W said, it definitely has it's perks. Depending on where you work, for me, I would more enjoy living outside JoCo (Paola, Tongie, Piper, Basehor, etc.) and having the perks nearby.
I would agree, but I lived too close to these three cities. :P

I'm a little late here, but as someone who would never live in JoCo again, I'd recommend the Northland. I think Park Hill is a good school district from what I've heard, and there's a new high school that was just built, Staley High School. I've heard the principal is hard core there and has high standards. (Not sure what district that is, and dont know much about the other schools in it.) I used to work at the community college, and seeing how spoiled A LOT of those kids are, it makes me ill.
I just like the diversity of the MO side better. Plus, I didnt care for the arrogance around JoCo. I feel like it's over-populated too. Seems like traffic's a lot heavier there during rush hour. It's far too suburban for me. The northland feels less like the suburbs, I think. I honestly just love the northland/downtown/plaza. JOCO, I could live without.
