portland area wineries & sites

i know i'm late to be writing and asking for recommendations, but a resource i thought i had in the portland area to make suggestions went and flaked on me.

so, dh and i are huge wine enthusiasts and want recommendations of the top ones we MUST visit.  then, we will also want to take in sites of the city and surrounding area that are classic/must see experiences.

what do you recommend?

  • I absolutely love Eola Hills Winery.  It's in Rickreall, which is about an hour away from downtown Portland, near Salem.  The quickest way to get there is take I-5 South.  Go on Sunday morning and they do a fantastic brunch, $25 a person includes 2 glasses of their wine, and it's a great experience.  You actually eat in the cellar.  DH and I go several times a year.

  • Domaine Drouhin, Kenneth Wright Cellars (they have an offsite tasting facility), Archery Summit.

    For sparkling, Argyle.

  • Ditto on Domaine Drouhin and Archery Summit. Skip Domaine Serene; I thought their wine was horrible. If you head out to that area (Dundee), you will come across a million wineries. There's also Ponzi, which is closer to Portland. You can see the itinerary for the wine tour with Lynne Rossetto Kasper of The Splendid Table here: http://splendidtable.publicradio.org/about/oregon_tour.pdf

  • I third Archery Summit and Domain Drouhim. Although I have to disagree with the above poster, I adore Domain Serene, easpecially their unoaked chardonnay called Etoile. One of my favorate wines ever.

Also here are some ones that we love: Carlton Winemaker's Studio (a collective of several local winemakers), Three Graces, Elk Cove, Sokol Blosser, Cuneo Cellars, Penner-Ash, Rex Hill, Willakenzie Estates and Adelsheim. Beaux-Freres is also absolutely amazing, but they don't have an open tasting room, but you can make an appointment and taste while walking the vineyards and hearing about their biodynamic processes (it is $20, but well worth the $$!)

Those are all in Newburg/Dundee/Carlton which are all very close together (Elk Cove is in Gaston, about 20 min from Carlton) and are all wonderful. I'm going to SO miss drinking wines this summer and visiting the vineyards. Give us a report after you go so I can live vicariously through you!

Wow, long post. Can you see I'm obsessed?

  • Check out the Hood River/Columbia Gorge area wineries too!  (and Hood River, as it's one of the coolest spots in Oregon)

Cathedral Ridge and Erin Glenn are great.  Dry Hollow makes good wines too.  Check out http://www.columbiagorgewine.com/wineries.htm for more information.

    Have fun :-)
