Looking for things to do in southeast TN?

My sister moved to southeast TN a few months ago.  She is out in the country and hasn't found much to do.  She has 3 kids and really needs something to get them out of the house and to meet people.  Any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: Looking for things to do in southeast TN?

  • do you know the name of the town she lives in??  that would be helpful
  • Madisonville (she says it is a VERY small town).
  • It looks like it is halfway between Knoxville and Chattanooga. ?

Chattanooga is a great town and has a ton of stuff for kids and adults....aquarium, Rock City, Incline railway, ruby falls and tons of other things that I cant remember right now. ?Totally worth a day trip.

  • ditto chattanooga. we live in Nashville, but take the kids there a lot for the aquarium (we have a membership) and there is other stuff there for kids too.
  • I think that town you mentioned is outside of Maryville, which is outside of Knoxville.  I believe they are close to the Smokey Mountains National Park, if so, there is always something to do there, like go white water rafting, just visit the park,  There is always Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, which has ALOT to offer children, you have Dollywood, Splash Country, and Ripleys Aquarium.  Also, Knoxville is pretty close as well, we have a zoo, there is a baseball park (Smokies) but that is closer to Sevierville.  We have childrens museums, our city website is www.knoxville.org.  Knoxville will be a little bit of drive, but there is alot to keep her children busy.  I also ditto Chattanooga, it is a great town.  I think they may have some caverns close to where she is too!  I hope the above helps out a little.
  • Wow small world! I live in Sweetwater... which is in the same county as Madisonville. Sweetwater is like 10 mins from Madisonville.... and there is nothing to do really anywhere in our county. It just depends on what she is looking for. If she is looking for shopping the best place to go is Knoxville. If she is looking for places to take the kids Gatlinburg and Pideon Forge aren't too far. About 1 hr to an 1 1/2. There is tons to do there... as for local stuff to do... not so much... during the summer she can take them to the city pool, I am not sure where the one is in Madisonville but the one in Sweetwater is pretty nice and it is right beside all the ball fields, basketball courts, soccer fields, track and duck park...( the kids can feed the ducks there and you can walk from the pool to the duck park) Um... depending on the ages of her kids she could take them to the lost sea but that is kind of a one time thing. Athens is pretty close to Madisonville, there are a few more resturants there and if she wants to take them for Ice Cream the Dairy Barn is great! I am trying to think of other things to do... has she checked out the lake? If she lives in Madisonville she only about 10 mins from Tellico Lake, she could always take the kids there... or even better if she goes on HWY 68 to tellico, there is a great swimming spot up there it's about 10 mins from Madisonville. She can stop and ask anybody in Tellico (very small town) where the Beach is... it is a little Ice Cream, hot dog, hamburger place right beside the swimming spot up there. Alot of people take their kids up there durning the summer. You can have her email me if you want... my email is kinzalow12@yahoo.com and maybe I can give her some more ideas...
