What else should I do?

Okay so Saturday DH and I went fishing at Loxahatchee Nature Reserve right around the corner from our house, and we were getting ready to leave but we thought we would just go drive for a few minutes to see if I could see some gators. (because I love to look at them but can't be to close) lol well we went over to where they launch the air boats. And there were a ton of people out there. We see a group of people all standing by the water, and all of a sudden I see them throwing food out to the gators.

I was like WTF there were little kids doing this too. This one guy takes this big piece of meat out of his cooler and walks in the water (like 2 feet from the gator) and hands it to the gator. I flipped out and screamed "I hope he bites your hand off you dumbasss" lol There are signs that are posted that say do not feed them.

So, we go looking for the park ranger and can't find him. I ended up sending in a complaint to the FWC stating what had happened and if there was something I needed to do or could do to get a park ranger out there full time.

I'm nervious to go out there now, b/c the gators are going to think that everyone is going to feed them and they are going to get too close and attack. I'm sure this has been going on for awhile but I think something needs to happen because thats rediculous. Those gators weren't even scared of those guys.

Sorry this got so long. What else do you all think  should do to get someone out there to watch this?

Re: What else should I do?

  • Wow, and then people complain that the gators are on their yard... etc. They should not be feeding them!! I so agree with you, you have done the right thing by calling in and complaining.

Im no help, but i think you have done the best that you can.

     GL and keep us updated!

  • Hey girl! I just read your blog too...I think you should definitely call. Unless there's a specific SUPERVISED feeding section where visitors can safely feed the wildlife, it's probably not a good idea for them to do so. I'm not sure if just posting a sign would be enough either. They need to make sure that they have park rangers positioned in that location to make sure that the rules are followed. I'm sure the last thing they need is a big media frenzy because the gators got too comfortable with people.
  • Yah right now I'm just waiting to hear back from them. I sent in the complaint and I also took the number so I have it next we are out there and I see it. The signs do nothing except show that its posted so when officers come out there they can give them a fine for feeding. There is definitly not an area for feeding. The gators just hang out near the boat launch b/c soooo many people feed them.

If this complaint doesnt do anything I'm going to get a potion to sign and take it out there to the fishermen b/c we were talking to some other people out there as we were leaving and this one guy said that one charged him so I"m sure there are people out there that will sign it.

  • This is terrible. Good for you for taking the initiative to try to do something about it. I hope you get a call back and your complaint spurs some action. Keep us posted.
  • Can I say it? People are just plain dumb. Why in the world would you get close enough to a wild gator to feed it, unless there was a trained gator wrangler there to supervise. Ugh. Way to go on being proactive, Katie. I would've done the same thing. If you don't hear anything back regarding your complaint, you might consider emailing a news station about it seeing if they can do something. Gators + people being dumb and getting near them = scary 11 o'clock news coverage. Stick out tongue

I thought about contacting the news. I just don't want to be on it. I did get an email address that goes right the the FWC manager so we will see where that gets me. If no where I'll email into the news station and get them to do a story out there, as long as I don't I to be on TV.
