Baby Name Language Issue

Hi There --

DH and I are Miami natives from Cuban-American parents. Both sets of parents speak English & Spanish fluently, however our grandparents (baby's great-grandparents) do not. We are having a hard time picking a name that is easily said in both English & Spanish. (We aren't very much into Hispanic names).

So, the question is...Should I care if the baby's great-grandparents can't really pronounce the baby's name? We are really torn on this issue.

Thanks,
Cyn

Re: Baby Name Language Issue

  • Hi. We're also in somewhat the same boat.  We didn't want a hispanic name either.  DH's parents speak English (though his mom not too great) and my parents don't really speak it.  The name we picked out is Hunter, so what we did (maybe since before we got pregnant) was have them say it to make sure they weren't going to massacre the name!  In the end, you should choose a name that you are your DH like and not base it on whether someone can pronounce it (you can always teach them that).  Just my 2 cents Smile

  • I agree with PPs. I think over time, and maybe with a little practice, everyone will be able to say the baby's name comfortably.
  • I had another situation where my family is hispanic and my grandparents don't speak english but my huusbadn is American and his family doesn't speak spanish so I picked a name I liked and grandparents just gave the baby a nickname they like.  So we have Douglas III (Trey) and my grandparents call him Chapuline.  That seems to work
  • Totally relate to this. When my MIL (in-laws are Asian) first heard my name "Virginia", she thought it was hard to pronounce, lol. I know that the name we picked out, Benjamin, will be challenging, but they can call him "Ben" for short if they'd like. We are taking FIL's name, Chin-Ti, and using it for the baby's middle name. Everyone's happy. :)

And I totally agree with the pp's and specifically with Chrissy's comment about giving the baby a Hispanic nickname.

  • I am Cuban-American too and many of my cousins have chosen very very American names for their children. One of my cousins named her son Jayden.

The grandparents will learn how to pronounce the name. Even if its just with a little accent it will sound fine. Its acutally kinda cute to hear our grandmother call my cousin "yay-din" :)

  • I wouldn't worry either. It happens with DJ as well, his grandparents call him deejay. My mom is having a fit b/c I want to name my girl Hope and she thinks its stupid, that it should be a hispanic name. It is your child, not theirs pick the one you want.
