Tennessee Travelin'

Hey Ladies!  We live in St. Louis and are planning a weekend trip to Nashville in Sept.  Would anybody be willing to share some general touristy info?  We'll have a car, so transportation won't be an issue, but we do enjoy areas where we can walk to do things...dinner, bars, etc.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...hotels, resturants, bars, attractions, etc.  TIA!

Re: Tennessee Travelin'

  • I like to bar hop down Broadway and hit the *** tonks on Saturday afternoons. They music is always good (and I dont really like country), no cover, bars are pretty empty and not smokey. ?Opryland Hotel is worth going to.

  • what do you like? If you want to look at old houses Belle Mead Plantation or THe Hermatige (Pres. Andrew Jackson's house).

Parks--Radnor Lake is a beautiful oasis in the middle of Nashville that is fun to walk around.

Downtown Franklin is the site of one of the bloodiest civil war battles. Franklin has a very cute downtown area with some great restaurants.

Loveless Cafe is one place to do brunch.

  • Thanks for the tips.  In response to your question- we do like to do outdoorsy stuff, so we will have to check ou the lake :)  We were also thinking about taking a drive to the mountains and doing some white water rafting (we don't really have any sort of timeline yet so we're up for anything).  For night activities we were looking to eat some good dinners and then hit some bars with good live music, not necessarily country.  Thanks ladies!

  • There aren't any mountains around Nashville (those are further east towards Knoxville). Also, I don't know of any white water rafting close to Nashville. The closest I have seen/been to is the Ocoee River, which is south of Nashville. There are lots of canoeing places near Nashville like Harpeth River (just west of Nashville) and Buffalo River (south of Nashville). We went on a canoeing trip on the Buffalo and were able to camp on the site where our trip ended.

Like the others said, Opryland Hotel is neat. It is a huge hotel with indoor conservatories- so tons of plants, waterfalls, trails, etc. You can park at the mall adjacent (Opry Mills) and walk on a free path (vs. paying to park in the actual hotel parking). I also think the Hermitage is worth seeing- it is Andrew Jackson's plantation. There are several buildings, as well as the mansion itself, that the tour includes.

One of my favorite places to go is Cheekwood. It is another historic mansion which is now an art gallery. Also, it has tons of gardens that you can walk through. Also, when people I know come from out of town they enjoy going to Centennial Park. It has a replica of the Parthenon of Athens (art museum inside, which I have never been to) as well as some gardens, a pond, etc.

It is not a spectacular water park, but Nashville Shores is fun if you are looking for a unique water park. It has several slides, a pool, and is on the lake, so you can sit on the "beach" and swim in the lake.
