My "goal" job keeps coming up....

So, DH and I are planning to move up to PDX next summer, but I've started the job search just to keep my eyes/ears out and research companies I want to work for (like it's that easy?!). My goal company has recently had 3 jobs that I'm well qualified for that keep coming up. The latest one that I just saw this  AM is PERFECT for me. I was tempted to apply for the other 2 but didn't...but I think this one? It would a great opportunity for me. Should I appply even though I have NO plans to move up there until next spring/summer? DH would be stoked if I ended up getting the job and we'd just work something out in the mean time....but I'd have NOWHERE to live and we can't afford 2 places...DH has to finish school down here and should be done next spring? Ay ay ay. And just this AM I was thinking "I'm bored and ready for a new job."

  • Hmmm...

Well, the girls on this board will tell you to definitely have a job lined up before you get here. Unemployment kinda eats it here right now.

In my case, my DH was suddenly offered a xfer, so I didn't have time to find one myself right away. My 'job' became getting our family and pets across the country in record time! lol!

Here is what I suggest for your situation: Send a very nice letter of interest to the HR manager of this company. Tell them you are expecting to transefer to the area in (x timeframe) and you would love to work for them. Tell them why they should be excited about you. Then, see if you can call that person a few weeks later and establish a friendship of sorts. For the rest of the time till your move, you should send your new 'friend'  updates and such. but not TOO much. just to keep yourself on their radar. Like "Hi person, I just saw XYZ on your website and think that is so neat that you're implementing this in the injdustry. I wanted to let you know that we plan to be in PDX around XYZ, and if you have any positions that match my skills at that time, i would love to come in and introduce myself."

Of course, tailor your formality/lack thereof to the audience. :)

    Thanks Scarlett for the suggestion!

My only concern is that this is a HUGE company (think...large worldwide company located in the PDX area...) and is similar to mine (similar industry but smaller). So, I know how they run and it's not small enough to just pop in and say hi and meet someone. You either need an "in" or you have to apply online like everyone else. At my company, we get people all the time that say "oh, I'd love to work for you! Please keep my resume on file" and while we love the interest, we have too many qualified candidates that come thorugh to do so so we really can't do that.  This company is like 10x the size of mine (which is already substansial) so I'm at a loss....I'm worried this job will slip away and then by the time I'm ready there won't be anything.

There are certainly a few other small companies I have my sights set on that I can do that with, though! I like the idea of making a 'friend' at the company.

Well, it sounds like you really can't apply for the job right now.  If you applied and were offered the position, you'd just have to turn it down and it might come across as you wasting everyone's time.  That's not a good impression to leave if you plan on applying for this company when you do move here.

  • I think I have to agree with Jumper here...

If you WERE offered the position, is it possible you could come up early and wait for DH? Thats the only scenario I see working both ways.  Sorry...sounds like a tough situation

I actually think DH is motivated enough to make that happen...in looking casually, rent is SO much cheaper in OR than san Diego. For the 2 other positions I saw a month  ago, I was thinking was Jumper said (that I'd turn them down, so why apply.) But now that this new one is open, I think that it might be enough motivation for me to move up there. I can do the long distance thing, and my IL's are looking to move up here anyways (don't worry-they're retired, so no need to look for employment other than voulnteer work!), so I'm so on the fence.

  • if the job really seems perfect for you, then i think you should apply and then try your hardest to make it work. if you really think you could figure out a way (stay at a short term lease studio apartment or something) then i say do it...if you know there's no way, then don't apply and take starlett's suggestion (i think it's great..but totally understand your points about them just kinda filing away the paper)

i'm currently in the process of looking for a job..we came out here for dh to go to school..and it's definitely rough. i haven't really started searching hard-core yet but jobs to seem pretty scarce (but i came from detroit sooooo things were even worse there so im used to it)

  • Renting is a lot cheaper esp if you look in Beaverton or Tigard as opposed to Portland itself. You could easily find a one-bedroom apartment for $600 or so. If this job really sounds so perfect I think you should apply for it. If you got it, it would be a pain to be away from your DH for a while but you can make it work.
