Good restaurants in Roanoke?

I'm not from that area but will be getting together with some friends (also not from Roanoke) and was looking for dining recommendations.  Preferably not too pricey.

Thanks!

Re: Good restaurants in Roanoke?

  • Yay!  Something I can actually answer!! :)

What kind of food are you looking for?  And, do you want it downtown or just in the general area?

Macado's is always a favorite!  It is relatively cheap and has about a million different choices of sandwich, salad, etc. type things - and the food is great!  They also usually have drink specials going all the time.

     Alejandro's is good for Mexican.

Awful Arthur's for seafood - but can get a little pricey.

And then there are chain restaurants pretty much everywhere in the area!  Depends on what you are looking for :) HTH a little bit!

  • We're still figuring out exactly what we're doing...any suggestions for things to do?  It's actually a few ppl from the Pets board that live in the VA area, and we decided to meet up in Roanoke.  Something to do on a Saturday...it's going to be August 1st.  Someone suggested the caverns.

    Thanks for the recs!

Also, good hotels?  I need a pet-friendly one...but not everyone is bringing their dog.

  • I don't think anything is going on in the city other than the market that weekend.  But Dixie Caverns is pretty cool and is only a couple minutes south of Roanoke on 81.

As far as hotels, we have had really good experience with Quality Inn's in the area and I believe that they allow pets.  I know Best Western usually does as well.  I think Quality Inn actually had the best rate last time we checked and the people were super friendly (and the rooms were great!) - at least in Salem (which is right next to Roanoke).  Basically, the further away from the airport you are, the cheaper the rates probably are.

you didn't mention the cuisine that you guys might be interested in, but here are a few of my faves:

    -grace's (pizza)

    -fiji island (polynesian/chinese)

    -kabuki's (japanese)

    -tong's thai (thai)

-hollywood's (sandwiches, salads, chicken/steak/seafood, awesome desserts)

can't help with a pet friendly hotel, sorry :) but as far as stuff to do that weekend, there's always the art museum, dixie caverns is nearby, there's a small peach festival downtown that sat, a dog show at the civic center (since it's a pets people gtg). hope you have fun, let us know if you have any other questions!

  • Just FYI, Kabukis is delicious, but it can be pricey. Awful Arthurs is awesome too, but like pp said a little pricey based on what you get. They really are great restaurants though.

  • the Natural Bridge is up 81 a little ways, but it has a nice little hike and allows pets. I blogged about it back in February (link in sig). I recommend Macadoo's also. I don't eat out too much and I am new to the area, so I'm not much help. But have fun!
