We are visiting San Antonio for the first time this week. We are staying at the Marriott downtown. We are planning to do the usual touristy things--river walk, Alamo. We are bringing our 7 mo old.
Any other things we shouldn't miss (we don't want to spend alot of money)?
We were planning on taking the airport shuttle (and then walking to the river walk and alamo), but I'm curious if there is a cheaper alternative.
Any restaurant recommendations? We are especially interested in authentic Mexican.
Thanks!!
Re: visiting San Antonio
You can take the trolly to Market Square (El Mercado.) I would rec. eating at La Margarita or Mi Tierra... both a tad touristy but v. good. It is a fun place to walk around
Rosario's is a local favorite... about 1 mile south on South Alamo (is that right?) It's in an area called Southtown. You could walk there... It's kinda trendy and very reasonably priced.?
The missions are really pretty and would give you some great photo opps!?
Have fun!!!?
Lauren got you off to a great start!
Definitely Mi Tierra and La Margarita....again, touristy but very good. Mi Tierra's panderia is awesome!
Near the alamo, the have a couple of touristy attractions like Ripley's and I think something called the Texas Adventure or something like that....I remember going to it many many years ago.
There's also the Tower of the Americas and the shops in La Villita.
I only recommend Mi Tierra for the pastries and a cup of coffee/juice. The last four times we've eaten there I was very disappointed with the food. Instead I would recommend El Mirador (particularly the appetizer Huitlacoche Empanada. Oh my, it is my favorite food evah!). Rosario's is also very good. I've never had anything bad there. (My favorites are the fish tacos and shrimp nachos. For Tex Mex La Margarita or Casa Rio would be great too, (enchiladas, beef tacos, etc...)
HTH, and have a great time!
I'd also recommend El Mirador on S. St Mary's for Tex-Mex. For true Southern Mexican, Cascabel's on S. St Mary's (a few blocks further down) is excellent. They don't serve alcohol but you can bring your own and their limonada is perfect.
I'm not a big fan of the Mercado or Riverwalk Mexican restaurants. There's definitely better around, though the atmosphere is probably best at these.
