New to Chicago area

A good friend of mine moved to Chicago about a month ago for a job at Career Builder. She's a really great, outgoing, funny person, but she's having trouble adjusting. I was just curious if anyone had any ideas for helping her get out and meet people, adjust to the big city, or just overall feel better about missing home. It's hard for me to give her advice since I went to college within 30 minutes of home and now have moved back to my hometown with DH.

Thanks for any suggestions to cheer up my friend!

Re: New to Chicago area

  • It can be hard to move to Chicago when you don't know anyone in the area. I would encourage her to get involved in areas where her strengths are: volunteer at her church or animal shelter, or look at Joelen's meetup group--she's always posting events and ways to get involved. Joelen spends most of her time on the WC board, but she's got a link to Chicago GTGs in her siggy. Your friend should check that out!
  • I am also new to Chicago. I am meeting people through meetup.com, a website where you can form groups with people who have similar interests. Through that website, people can join a book club, cooking club, language learning club, sports, or meet up with people who have a special interest in dance, theatre, etc. I've already made a friend through the site.

Otherwise, she could try taking a class at a community college. Classes are pretty inexpensive, and there are fun ones that encourage interaction like golf, theatre, or cooking.

If all else fails, just have her email me! I'm new to town and need to make friends too.
