My husband and I are thinking of relocating to the York area from Baltimore. The amount of house that we'll get for our buck is MUCH better than this area, and we like the fact that we'll still be reasonably close to our friends and family here. I would love your suggestions on areas we should look at that:
-have good housing options ($275-300k range)?
-have good schools (for our son and also for my husband who is a teacher)
-are NOT in the middle of nowhere and have access to stores, restaurants, recreation, etc. After living in the city we don't want to be bored! ![]()
-have reasonable access to 83
And if there's anything else you can think of...I really appreciate the help! ?
?
Re: Recommend your town/area in or around York...
I live in Dallastown School District, we are more Southern York County. My husband use to commute to Baltimore for work (about 45 minutes on a good day)....we're not far from 83 or civilization and Dallastown is one of the best school districts in York. Finding a good district for your son shouldn't be a problem because almost all the schools in York County are decent (I would stay away from York City School District). The hardest part will most likely be for your husband to find a job. There just aren't alot of teaching positions available.
Good luck!
Ditto Dallastown. Red Lion is pretty good too and in that general area.
If you are looking at new homes we looked at Sage Hill and really liked it (but it is too far from my husband's work). It is in the Dallastown school district. It is off of the Queen Street exit, near stores and close enough to York to take advantage of downtown. This is their website http://www.charterhomes.com/neighborhood/sghl/
We live north of York and I used to commute to Hunt Valley, it was just a little too far. One thing to take into consideration when moving up here is that our property taxes are higher and go by school district. Here is a link to tax rates, the amount you pay is based on the county appraisal (you can look it up for a specific home on the county website). Central and York Suburban are also good school districts. If you are looking for an older home Spring Garden Township is nice. You can search homes by school district at Morgan Collins' website.
I live in West York and love it. It's a smaller area, but has everything I need within a 2 mile radius (gas station, shopping, parks, restaurants, etc).
From what I hear (I don't have kids) the school district is pretty good.
I can get to 83 in about 10 minutes, depending on traffic.
The zip codes are 17404 & 17408 if you search for houses that way or by West York School District.
Good luck with your search!
We moved to Stewartstown from Baltimore County 4 years ago and are really happy here. Stewartstown is about 5-10 minutes off 83. We are off the first exit in PA. Our town has no stop lights and is quiet but we do have a food store, Rite Aid, Subway, elementary school, and two parks. And Hunt Valley and York are both within 25 minutes away.
School district is Southeastern. Like someone posted, be prepared for the taxes. Also there are things like paying for trash collection and huge water and sewers bills that are in MD. All in all, we got much more house for the dollar up here and am very glad we made the move.
