Hi! I am hoping you can help me.
In September me, my husband and 3 yr old twins are driving up to Washington for my Grandpas memorial service. We are going to take our time and spend a couple of days in Oregon on our way up there. We will be driving up I-5 the entire way. Our first stop will be in Roseburg and we plan on visiting the drive through safari there. But other than that, we don't know what else to do. I would love to see some nature, is there any parks to walk through with some nice waterfalls or something? I will be 6 months pregnant at the time so I won't be able to do any strenuous hiking. We don't have a plan as to what other towns we would like to stop at/stay the night.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you!
Shannon
Re: California Nestie needing some travel advice
An absolute MUST is Multnomah Falls. It's a huge gorgeous waterfall, and you can easily see it from the freeway, it's not a climb at all to get to it, but they do have a cute restaurant/gift shop, and it's breathtaking.
From I-5 you would go to downtown Portland, take I-84 East for about an hour, and the falls are on your right. Stop there and have lunch, then drive back to I-5. Totally worth the 3 hour detour.
We just went to the Winston Safari near Roseburg. It's def. a family friendly place to visit with a nice drive through and a walk-through area. There is not much near there though in terms of waterfalls, though the road from Roseburg towards Diamond Lake and Crater Lake is very pretty.
Closer to Portland, near Salem, you have the Silver Falls State park. This park offers long and shorter hikes to see some beautiful waterfalls. It doesn't have to be too strenuous at all.
And from Portland to Multnomah Falls is def. less than an hours drive. More like 30-40 minutes.

LOL, this exactly. None of these will require heavy hiking. Multnomah Falls is particularly accessible. Silver Falls has a couple of different hikes, so you can do the short one. You probably wouldn't want to hike down the the lake, but viewing Crater Lake from the rim is still impressive.
Also, if you're heading east from Portland, take the scenic hwy instead of I-84. It's the old highway and goes by lots of little waterfalls and is just more scenic (although slower). It will also take you to Multnomah Falls and will connect to I-84.
Our nieces and nephews really enjoy the fish hatchery by Cascade Locks (on I-84 between Portland and Hood River).
You may also like going to Sauvie's Island in Portland. There are lots of u-pick farms and produce stands.
