Name Change Help

I am looking for someone who had their name changed in Virginia...

I got married last Halloween, but because of my stuff being in New York this entire past year (long story!) I have not had a lot of things I needed to switch over with me and decided to wait.  Now that we are finally getting our stuff brought down, I am ready to change!  However, I am unsure about what this involves.  I printed out the social security form and have all my id's.  I need to pick up a copy of our marriage certificate but what I was wondering... do I need to do anything else and how much will this cost in the long run?

Thanks so much for any assistance!

Re: Name Change Help

  • I just went through this  :o)   All I needed was my marriage certificate (certified) and my driver's license for the SS office to prove marriage and names.  When I went to the DMV, they didn't even need my new SS card; just my license and the marriage certificate.  They now have new driver's license cards and those will be mailed to you in 7-10 business days.  I got mine like a week later.  With the new ID and marriage certificate you can begin the name changes with your banks, credit cards, place of employment, etc.  It's really that simple; or has been for me so far!
  • I just had my name changed too. To get a new SS card with your married name on it, fill out all the paperwork you printed and take it to a SS office. (I had to drive to Wytheville, but it was the closest one to me. There is probably one in Roanoke as well.) You will need your marriage certificate and your birth certificate too I think. Its a pain in the butt to change all this crap! You think they could have had a box on the marriage license that you checked.
  • I didn't need my birth certificate? just the marriage certificate and driver's license.  :o)

May wanna check with your local DMV, but all I needed to obtain my new driver's license was the marriage certificate. Hah!

  • i'm in abingdon and the lady at the dmv here said all i needed was my marriage certificate.
